Big Data

Big Data is data that has a high volume, speed, and variety, the data is too complex for traditional information systems. The complexity with Big Data is finding applications to analyze, store, transfer, and visualize the data. Big data can also mean finding deeper correlations in data that already exists. Business intelligence and analytic professionals create big data into useful information that business leaders can use for informed decisions.

Relative to Coursework

Big Data is relative to our coursework for MIS 2502 class because we used programs like: MySQL Workbench, SAS enterprise, Excel Pivot Tables. In class we used SQL queries to answer questions and analyze the data in the MySQL database. In class we used SAS enterprise minor to analyze and help visualize large data sources. In class we also used excel spreadsheets of over 4,000 line items to create Pivot Tables to help analyze the data. These programs helped us learn how to analyze and store Big Data.

Big Data in Healthcare

slide4

One example of Big Data used in the healthcare industry is athenahealth. Athenahealth uses Big Data to drive performance for independent healthcare providers. Athenahealth uses the data that is collected by the health providers on the nationwide network, to analyze trends like weekly nationwide flu trends. Not only are they able to analyze flu trends they are then able to track a percent increase or decrease over previous week. Athenahealth is able to visualize and describe the Big Data in real time from their cloud network to help describe public health trends. The information that Athenahealth provides makes it easier for doctors, and scientists to better understand the diseases they are trying to treat. Athenahealth has found a way to surpass the complexity of storing, analyzing, and transferring big data, and created a way to help doctors, and patients.
