Read Between the Lines: Decoding Charts and Graphs in the News
In this workshop, we saw how data visualizations/charts can be misrepresented and lead to false interpretations. Most interestingly, we looked at a chart created for unemployment rates during President Barack Obama’s 2011 reign, where a news outlet misrepresented data by incorrectly plotting points on the chart to indicate rates increased. This workshop is extremely beneficial as it makes you think twice before trusting a chart and the data associated with it. As an MIS major, it is imperative that I learn how to manage data and the stories it can tell, as well as understanding stories developed by others in order to avoid misinformation.
