Commercial IT Intern

  1. Job function (e.g., overall role, assigned tasks)
    1. My role within the Commercial IT Insights & Analytics team was to further improve the functionality of a data intelligence tool called Collibra soon to be fully utilized by many AZ IT users. I was tasked with documenting my experience using the tool, identifying critical data elements, and running AWS Athena queries while putting myself in the shoes of the end-users and taking action on potential problems to ensure a cleaner user experience from the start. On a weekly basis, I participated in international meetings with team members who work in Chennai, India on AZ’s Commercial Data Catalog. We discussed the implementation of dataset lineage diagrams to assist data scientists, the grouping of data assets through the use of tags and the continuous ingestion of Healthcare data into AZ’s data warehouse with the purpose of gaining valuable insights.
  2. Examples of projects (e.g., list the projects you worked on and what you accomplished)
    1. The personal project I worked on this summer was on a SaaS called Collibra. After understanding the goal of this project and the value that the tool could bring to the organization, I worked to bring about improvements by first taking note of my experience, questions, and problems encountered. My accomplishments for this project include revising the organization’s sales community descriptions to add more context to technical references, enable table level descriptions appearing in search results, implemented relevant and effective technical tags to data assets, and updated the refresh rate and data latency for all sales datasets. Additionally, I worked with four other Commercial IT Interns on an intern project focused around the concept of social listening. We implemented a tool that would monitor the internal communications of AZ’s employees with the goal of spotting complaints related to IT resources to allow for senior leadership to address these issues before any formal surveys are conducted. My role was a Business Analyst and I worked to analyze the organization’s project requirements by utilizing our project’s charter, speaking with potential platform sales representatives to ensure our needs would be met, conducted numerous matrices and FIT/GAP analysis diagrams. In conclusion, we presented our project findings to senior leadership and other individuals working in Commercial IT at AZ and responded to panel questions.
  3. What you learned and how it relates to your major (e.g., describe what you learned from this experience in the context of specific courses)
    1. Throughout my internship, I gained extremely valuable experience in the field of information systems, created meaningful connections between numerous departments, frequently worked with teams and individuals working outside of the U.S., and learned extensive information pertaining to the pharmaceutical and healthcare industry. Without a doubt, the #1 most transferable class I’ve taken during my experience as an MIS major thus far has to be MIS 2502 – Data Analytics. I utilized my knowledge of MySQL and NoSQL databases, analytical data stores, decision trees, and more. Having a foundation in SQL was critical in my role at AZ and allowed me to breeze through the typical learning curve that an IT intern may face. It allowed me to understand complex concepts quickly and be able to understand higher level projects much more in detail such as in the countless AWS cloud computing services that are used within the organization. With the personal project I worked on using Collibra, a data intelligence tool, it allowed me to learn more about data governance and the concept of “shopping for data assets” and finding what you need when using querying or dashboard services.
