Greetings Students,
Welcome to Temple University and to Fall 2019 MIS 2101 Information Systems in Organizations Section 004. We meet from 6:00pm – 8:30pm Monday nights in Alter Hall Room A031. Our first night of class will be August 26th, 2019.
I will have the pleasure of serving as your professor this semester for MIS 2101 and I am looking forward to meeting all of you Monday night. A few things I would like to note, please forgive me in advance for the length of this email, but feel it is very important to cover a few topics before our first class. We DO NOT have a traditional syllabus for this course., nor are we using traditional tools in this course. For some of you, this will be a welcomed difference, for some of you, it will not be. Please know that we are working to make this class be most useful to students as they progress at Temple and into the working environment and welcome your feedback at anytime.
This course will utilize the MIS Community class site to deliver content including the traditional syllabus, readings, videos, assignments and the gradebook. You will use our course community site frequently and during each night of class to access the in-class activities. A computer/laptop is required – this is a Fox School of Business requirement. You will use your computer/laptop/i-pad device during each night of class to complete the in-class activities. These activities can not be completed outside of class and will be due the same night of class in order to obtain credit. The in-class activity sheets will be accessible via google-forms directly from our course community website. Please make sure you bookmark the site and that you are able to access it from your device BEFORE each class.
This course also requires you to purchase a book to be used the last third of the course, Javascript: Absolute Beginner’s Guide by Kirupa Chinnathamba ($19.39 paperback/$14.39 Kindle on Amazon, used text maybe cheaper ) and there is also a fee associated with the Max Lab readings/materials and assignments which is $19.99. You will be required to pay the fee as you start the first lab assignment – do not skip ahead of the activities and pay for this fee – as you follow the instructions of the assignments, you will be prompted to pay the fee when required.
Our community site has the latest and greatest information regarding the course, it contains all of the traditional syllabus information, the schedule of the 12 assignments along with due dates and detail step-by-step instruction for of each of the assignments, announcements regarding the course, and your grades (including a link to the gradebook application). This will be our primary means of on going communication for this course, including weekly emails and announcements, which I will also post on the community website – you are required to check your emails and/or the community site during the course of this class for any important announcements and updates. Please let me know in advance if there are any issues with you being able to meet the requirements to participate in this course – hardware requirements and/or material fees.
The detailed syllabus information can be found under the ABOUT menu on the course website. Please be sure that you have read through all of the details before Monday nights class. There is key information you will need to be clear on that will be critical towards your success in this course. Please also ensure you are familiar with most recent announcements posted on the course site. It is important for you to read everything in detail, again key information is posted for your understanding and reference. If you have any questions, we will address them upfront before lecture Monday night.
Also ensure you are present and on time, the first day of class will be very important as we will cover a lot of very important information and will also have lecture time covering our first topics and in-class activities – REMEMBER to bring your computer device.
This is not a traditional lecture class and the better you understand the approach used in this class, the more successful you will be. Again, please review the class site and come to class with any questions.
Should you have any questions prior to class, please feel free to email me directly. Note, the easiest way to reach me during the day is via email. Again, welcome to Temple University and to MIS 2101.
