REMINDERS: Week #10: Nov 4, 2019 MSCIS 2101 Section 4

November 10, 2019 Leave a Comment

With Exam #2 behind us, it’s time to begin to think about the next few weeks of class and to prepare for the coding sessions.

Prior to each lecture we review the Road Map and discuss what we are doing now and where we are headed. We’ve reached the final third of the semester and on Monday we will start the JavaScript coding portion of the course.

The HOME page of our Course Site has also been updated to include all links to materials for the coding portion of the class.  Please review these carefully and be very mindful of the due dates for assignments and plan accordingly.  Late assignments are not accepted.

I am going to need all of you to do the following before Monday:

  1. Make sure you get a copy of the required book and complete the assigned reading before class.
  1. You also have a video titled “The Importance of HTML” that you need to watch before the start of class on Monday.
  1. Starting Monday you will need to bring your laptop to each class.  You will be using it to learn to write code each class going forward.  This will need to be a Mac or a PC.  I know a few people bring some other sort of tablet/iphone/android device to class from time to time.  Most tablets will not work and mobile phones definitely do not work. You need a laptop that is either running the Mac operating system or Windows. Be sure to contact the tech center if you are having any laptop issues. Make sure your laptop is charged ahead of time and/or bring in your ac adaptor too!  There are no exceptions to this – please come prepared.
  1. I need you all to download and install a free text editor that is made for programming.  Windows people should download and install Notepad++.  Mac users should download and install BBEdit.  BBEdit will warn you that the free trial only last a limited period of time (I think it is 30 days) but don’t worry about that.  BBEdit will continue to run after the initial trial period.  A number of the high-end fancy features that we will not use will stop working after the trial period but the parts that we will be using will continue to work.
  1. I need you all to download and install the Chrome browser if you don’t have it already installed.  There are a number of different browsers out there and everyone has their favorite.  However, some of these browsers only run on Macs and others only run on PCs.  Chrome is a browser that runs on both Macs and PCs.  With everyone using the same browser it will be much easier for us all to learn how to use the developer’s tools found in the Chrome browser.

Please make sure you take care of these items before class on Monday – we will not troubleshoot or download these tools in class.  Links to the downloads can be found here, although you can google all of the applications and easily find them.

Let me know if there are any issues.

Dr Burrell
