Google Analytics Information

December 4, 2019 Leave a Comment

Students,

Just some helpful reading for your google analytics assignment:

https://www.optimizesmart.com/understanding-users-in-google-analytics/

Also, please remember to double and triple check your settings for analytics, if you get one of the settings incorrectly set, you run the risk of there being no data collected in your results.

Also, it can take up to 7 days or more for results to show up in your analytics after there has been activity – so please plan accordingly for your LearnIT#2 deadline.

December 2, 2019 Leave a Comment

Students,

As we near the end of the semester, this is just another gentle reminder, for those of you who are MIS MAJORs ONLY, this course requires that you complete 75 professional achievement points in order to receive a grade for the course.

Please do not forget to complete these points otherwise you will receive an Incomplete for the course until this requirement is satisfied.  Should you have questions regarding this requirement, you can contact the MIS department for further direction.

REMINDERS: Week #13: Dec 2, 2019 MSCIS 2101 Section 4

December 2, 2019 Leave a Comment

Welcome back, I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving!

This is Week #13. We are coming down to our last 3 classes of the semester. A few reminders as we enter tonight’s class.

1.  Tonight, Coding Assignment #2 is due at 11:59pm.  Please remember to name your files appropriately, LastName_FirstName.  Please use the name you are registered in the class with in order minimize delays with grading your assignments OR risk receiving a 0 on the assignment.

2. Gradebook was recently updated over the holiday – if you received a 0 on an assignment there are any number of reasons this could be the case.  You may not have named your assignment properly, therefore, I am unable to determine who turned in the assignment – i.e. many of you received a 0 on the coding academy assignment because you either did not name your file appropriately OR your name was not visible on the screen shot that you turned in OR you turned in the WRONG screen shot which still did not have your name on it OR you just didn’t turn it in at all.

3. For those of you who submitted the Code Academy Assignment on time and received a 0 because your assignment was not able to be identified as your assignment because either the file was named incorrectly or you did not provide a screen shot that identified that it was your assignment.  If you submitted the WRONG screen shot you will not receive credit.  Please Go back and look at what you turned in – if your name is not visible in the screen shot or the file name is not appropriately named – you can resubmit your file directly to me again by midnight TONIGHT, 12/2/2019, so that I can match it to your original submission. If I can not match it with what you have already submitted, you will receive a 0 for the assignment.   If you did NOT submit this assignment when it was originally due – please DO NOT send your assignment to me – this is NOT a new opportunity to submit the assignment.  This request is only for those who submitted the assignment on time but I was unable to determine WHO the assignment belonged to.

4. Tonight we will review LOOPS.  There will be 3 in class challenges and 3 homework assignments tonight.  Please ensure you review Deck 13.1, review the video on loops as well as read Chapter 5 on loops in order to be prepared for the discussion and in class assignment.  For those of you who like to get ahead, the files can be downloaded and setup – please make sure your code runs properly.  Our student workers will be in class again to provide assistance in class to help with getting your programs working and to make sure you have an understanding of the programs.

5. Coding assignment #3 will be due this FRIDAY Dec 6, 2019 at 11:59pm.  This assignment focusing on bringing together all of the coding concepts we have discussed over the last 3 weeks and enables you to demonstrate your new programming skills.  Please take advantage of the VIRTUAL HELPDESK should you need help with the coding assignments.  I encourage you to not wait until the last minute to seek assistance.

6. Finally, for those of you looking ahead to the LearnIT#2 assignment.  I again, encourage you all to not wait until the last minute on this assignment.  If you find that it is not working or you have no analytics, please remember to read through the assignment to ensure that you understand what data needs to be collected in order to complete the assignment.  If you are having difficulty with google analytics, go back to LearnIT#1 and re-apply the instructions carefully (you must follow the steps and set each setting properly) for setting up the analytics.  If you continue to have issues, please schedule time with the VIRTUAL HELPDESK which can be found on the top tab of our community page.  And finally, if you need my assistance, please reach out to me directly.

Regards,
Dr Burrell

REMINDERS: Week #12: Nov 18, 2019 MSCIS 2101 Section 4

November 18, 2019 Leave a Comment

Please note the following reminders for class tonight:

1. Your Coding Assignment #1 is due tonight 11/18/19 @11:59pm.  Please remember that the naming convention of the file MUST be correct in order for your assignment to processed for grading.  I am expected 3 files per student, replacing only the BOLD/RED items.  The file names per student that we are expecting are as follows:
  1. lastname_firstname_Unit2_05_C2F.html
  2. lastname_firstname  _Unit2_06_IngredientAdjuster.html
  3. lastname_firstname  _Unit2_07_MaleAndFemalePercentages.html
 2. For this week we are focusing on IF THEN ELSE and the SWITCH conditional statements.  Please make sure that you review Chapter 4 in your book.  Also view the video on Logical Operations and conditional logic and finally, review the discussion deck on this subject.

3.  Tonight we have 4 programs that we will work on in class as part of the in class activities. Please create a new folder for Week 12 coding assignments and download the 4 starter files, which contain the instructions for coding each of these assignments.  Coding files can be found on the In-class activity page on the class site under Week #12.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

LEARN IT#2 and Professional Achievement Points for MIS Majors

November 12, 2019 Leave a Comment

Students,

A quick reminder I wanted to share with you folks last night but completely forgot.

1. Please do not forget about your LEARN IT#2 assignment.  We started LEARN IT#1 very early in the semester which feeds the LEARN IT#2 assignment.  Do not wait until this assignment is due to check on it.  The last LEARN IT assignment requires you to collect some analytics about visitors to your page – if you find that you don’t have visitors or that your link to google analytics is NOT working, you will have some time to generate some traffic to your site and complete the last Learn IT assignment.

2. Also, as a reminder, also discussed at the beginning of the semester and posted on our community site,  for those of you who are MIS MAJORs ONLY, this course requires that you complete 75 professional achievement points in order to receive a grade for the course.  Please do not forget to complete these points otherwise you will receive an Incomplete for the course.

REMINDERS: Week #11: Nov 11, 2019 MSCIS 2101 Section 4

November 10, 2019 Leave a Comment

Students,

Welcome to Week #11.

Please note the following reminders for class tomorrow evening:

1. Your Code Academy assignment is DUE by Monday, 11/11/19 11:59pm.

2. Please also remember to complete your in-class coding challenges that we did not complete in class.   There were 4 that you were to complete outside of class: GuessANumber, Profits, LandCalculations, and TotalPurchases. Please submit your assignments using the following link for the in-class coding challenges by Monday 11/11/19 11:59PM.

3. Please remember the importance of reviewing Chapter 3 in your JAVA book and review the discussion slide deck 11.1.  It is extremely important that you are able to create a simple JavaScript program that is able to manipulate numbers and strings.  If you are struggling with this assignment, remember to utilize the Virtual Assistant to assist you.

4. During this week we will focus on Functions.  Please make sure that you download (and unzip) the files for download this week.  They can be found at the bottom of the In-Class Activities Page.  Please do not forget to download them to your MS2101 folder.  I would create a subfolder called Week 11 – so that you do not confuse these files with last week’s week 10 files.  There are four starter files with instructions in the comments of the file.

5. Some coding rules to remember
  • Variables CAN NOT start with numbers.  This means the first character CAN NOT be numeric. i.e. 3lastname
  • Spaces are not allowed in variable names. i.e last name
  • Arithmetic operators are (+,-,*,/,%)
  • Prompt always returns a string
  • Remember the 3 steps to writing a program: 1)Understand the problem, 2)Develop the Algorithm, 3)Write the code
  • For more rules, please see the Chapter 1 and 2 of your JAVASCRIPT book.

RESENDING: Re: REMINDERS: Week #10: Nov 4, 2019 MSCIS 2101 Section 4

November 10, 2019 Leave a Comment

Resending this today as a reminder for this evening’s class.

Please make sure you complete these tasks.  Here are a few things to think about:

  1. This course became a VERY different course this afternoon.  It will be very different from the first 9 weeks and it will be very different from any other course you have ever taken.  It is very important that you follow directions carefully and ask questions if you do not understand something.
  2. I am assuming you all have what I would call “basic computer skills”.  I assume that you know how to Google things.  I assume that you can follow a link, go to a site, download and install some software.  I assume that you can create a folder and download a file into that folder.  I assume you can open a file from within an application.  We have had too many students across the multiple sections for this course who struggled with what the school considers “basic computer skills”.  If you are struggling with any of these things, get some help!  There are plenty of online tutorials that you can use to learn basic computer skills.
  3. Do not fall behind!  What we do each week from this point on will build on the previous weeks.  If you are having trouble, get help.  If you fall behind you will have great difficulty catching up.  You need to come to class well prepared (do your readings and watch your assigned videos) and stay ahead.  You can visit Niki, Madison or me during office hours – see the Virtual Helpdesk link that was added on the community site tab.  You can meet with a student who can help you with your programming work online.
  4. When opening and editing your files in BBedit or Notepad ++, be sure not to change the extension of your coding files when you save your work; the correct extension is .html which is the file type you downloaded and will be working with this semester.
