REMINDERS: Week #2 Sept 9, 2019 – MSCIS 2101 Section 4

September 9, 2019 Leave a Comment

Students,

Welcome to Week #2 of MSCIS 2101.  Let me first apologize in advance for the length of this reminder.  Given that I have several new adds over the last 2 weeks, I will reiterate a few pertinent reminders from Week #1.

Please review the following reminders carefully to ensure you will be prepared to do your best in this course and ensure that you are aware of expectations for the week.

Week #2 Reminders

1. Another reminder that a laptop/ipad or internet accessible device is REQUIRED for this course and must be brought to class each week night.  This is a requirement of the Fox School of Business. You will be required to access and submit google forms during the group assignments of the course.

2. For those of you who are NEW to class (registered or added late), please review the ABOUT section of our COURSE SITE for pertinent details about the class schedule, learning outcomes, announcements, grading policies, course activities and weekly assignments.  We do not have a traditional syllabus, nor does this class utilize Canvas.  All assignments (weekly articles and video assignments), weekly in-class only activities, slide decks (that coincide with weekly lecture) and all other pertinent information (like how to turn in assignments) can be found on the course site.

3. The Course Schedule on the Homepage is your best friend!  Review and refer to it often. This contains all due dates/times for all assignments.  No Late Assignments Will Be Accepted.

4. You are expected to check your TU email frequently, as this will be my primary means of communication with you outside of our scheduled weekly class.  If you need to meet with me otherwise, appointments can be scheduled on an as needed basis.  I’m also generally accessible via phone and/or email and try to respond within the hour.

Now, for tonight’s class.  We have a lot to cover, please read carefully below:

1. Since we did not complete Discussion 1.2 from Week #1 – this will be our first topic.
  • Please ensure you have reviewed the required viewing – these can be found on the HOME page under Week #1  (there are two  – What is MIS? and Systems Analysis & Systems Architecture).
  • Review the Discussion deck 1.2 – also can be found on the HOME page under Week #1
  • Bring any questions you may have on this section
2. Prepare for our week #2 topic – An introduction to SwimLane Diagrams by reviewing the pre-work on the home page.
  • Read and take notes on the required reading
  • Read and take notes on the required viewing
  • Review and be prepared to discuss the Slide Deck Discussion 2.1
3. Since we will be completing Swim Lane diagrams in our in-class activities tonight (there are 2 in-class activities each night) – you will have two choices in how you want to complete this activity.  Regardless of the option you choose, the activity MUST be turned in electronically.  Paper versions will not be accepted in class.

OPTION #1
  • Download LucidChart and sign-up for a free account BEFORE you come to class
  • Create a new +Document select a Flowchart Template and choose the Basic Flowchart with Swimlanes
  • Do not select API Flowchart with Swimlanes
  • When you are complete with the in-class activity tonight, you will EXPORT the swimlane diagram to a PDF and upload this file to be submitted to obtain credit.
  • If you choose this option, it will be incumbent upon you to ensure your submission is readable – i.e. you MUST submit a readable PDF.  If it is not readable you will NOT receive credit.
OPTION #2
  • Bring pencil and paper (several pages of paper) to class so that you can draw your swimlane diagram during the in-class activity
  • You will then need to take a READABLE picture of your drawing, email it to yourself, and use this file to submit in order to obtain credit for the in-class activity.
  • If you choose this option, it will be incumbent upon you to ensure your photo/submission is readable.  If it is not readable you will NOT receive credit.

Please let me know if you have questions.  Looking forward to seeing everyone tonight.

Dr. Burrell

Greetings Students,

Welcome to Temple University and to Fall 2019 MIS 2101 Information Systems in Organizations Section 004.  We meet from 6:00pm – 8:30pm Monday nights in Alter Hall Room A031. Our first night of class will be August 26th, 2019.

I will have the pleasure of serving as your professor this semester for MIS 2101 and I am looking forward to meeting all of you Monday night.  A few things I would like to note, please forgive me in advance for the length of this email, but feel it is very important to cover a few topics before our first class.  We DO NOT have a traditional syllabus for this course., nor are we using traditional tools in this course.  For some of you, this will be a welcomed difference, for some of you, it will not be.  Please know that we are working to make this class be most useful to students as they progress at Temple and into the working environment and welcome your feedback at anytime.

This course will utilize the MIS Community class site to deliver content including the traditional syllabus, readings, videos, assignments and the gradebook.  You will use our course community site frequently and during each night of class to access the in-class activities.   A computer/laptop is required – this is a Fox School of Business requirement.  You will use your computer/laptop/i-pad device during each night of class to complete the in-class activities. These activities can not be completed outside of class and will be due the same night of class in order to obtain credit. The in-class activity sheets will be accessible via google-forms directly from our course community website.  Please make sure you bookmark the site and that you are able to access it from your device BEFORE each class.

This course also requires you to purchase a book to be used the last third of the course, Javascript: Absolute Beginner’s Guide by Kirupa Chinnathamba ($19.39 paperback/$14.39 Kindle on Amazon, used text maybe cheaper ) and there is also a fee associated with the Max Lab readings/materials and assignments which is $19.99.  You will be required to pay the fee as you start the first lab assignment – do not skip ahead of the activities and pay for this fee – as you follow the instructions of the assignments, you will be prompted to pay the fee when required.

Our community site has the latest and greatest information regarding the course, it contains all of the traditional syllabus information,  the schedule of the 12 assignments along with due dates and detail step-by-step instruction for of each of the assignments, announcements regarding the course, and your grades (including a link to the gradebook application).  This will be our primary means of on going communication for this course, including weekly emails and announcements, which I will also post on the community website – you are required to check your emails and/or the community site during the course of this class for any important announcements and updates.  Please let me know in advance if there are any issues with you being able to meet the requirements to participate in this course – hardware requirements and/or material fees.

The detailed syllabus information can be found under the ABOUT menu on the course website.  Please be sure that you have read through all of the details before Monday nights class.  There is key information you will need to be clear on that will be critical towards your success in this course.  Please also ensure you are familiar with most recent announcements posted on the course site.  It is important for you to read everything in detail, again key information is posted for your understanding and reference.  If you have any questions, we will address them upfront before lecture Monday night.

Also ensure you are present and on time, the first day of class will be very important as we will cover a lot of very important information and will also have lecture time covering our first topics and in-class activities – REMEMBER to bring your computer device.

This is not a traditional lecture class and the better you understand the approach used in this class, the more successful you will be.  Again, please review the class site and come to class with any questions.

Should you have any questions prior to class, please feel free to email me directly.  Note, the easiest way to reach me during the day is via email.  Again, welcome to Temple University and to MIS 2101.

Our community class site can be found here:  https://community.mis.temple.edu/mis2101sec004fall2019/   Please bookmark this site NOW.

My ITA for this course is Madison Collins (madison.collins@temple.edu).
