Good Afternoon MIS2101 Class,
I am still working through grades and plan to post updates by early next week. I am back from my conference and plan to be in class on time this evening.
We are beginning our final 3rd of the semester all based on coding. Tonight we will work together to build a good foundation to move forward together as a class.
Each class I plan to review the Road Map and discuss what we are doing now and where we are headed.. I am going to need all of you to be aware of what to expect for class tonight:
Make sure you get a copy of the required book and complete the assigned reading before class.
You also have a video titled “The Importance of HTML” that you need to watch before the start of class.
Starting tonight you will need to bring your laptop to class each and every day. You will be using it to learn to write code each and every day. This will need to be a Mac or a PC. I know a few people bring some other sort of tablet to class from time to time. Most tablets will not work and mobile phones definitely do not work. You need a laptop that is either running the Mac operating system or Windows. Be sure to contact the tech center if you are having any laptop issues. Make sure your laptop is charged ahead of time and/or bring in your ac adapter too! There are laptop borrowing stations in the Library if you need one.
I need you all to download and install a free text editor that is made for programming. Windows people should download and install Notepad++. Mac users should download and install BBEdit. BBEdit will warn you that the free trial only last a limited period of time (I think it is 30 days) but don’t worry about that. BBEdit will continue to run after the initial trial period. A number of the high-end fancy features that we will not use will stop working after the trial period but the parts that we will be using will continue to work.
I need you all to download and install the Chrome browser if you don’t have it installed already. There are a number of different browsers out there and everyone has their favorite. However, some of these browsers only run on Macs and others only run on PCs. Chrome is a browser that runs on both Macs and PCs. With everyone using the same browser it will be much easier for us all to learn how to use the developer’s tools found in the Chrome browser.
We will review this again tonight and begin some basic coding assignments using these tools.
In addition we will go over how to get assistance through a virtual helpdesk we set up with our pool of TAs for the course.
Thanks and see you tonight! Prof Latko
