It\u2019s a type of flow chart categorized by lanes (hence the name), and each lane represents a different actor in the system. These actors can be individuals, groups, divisions, or an<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">y similar entity, so long as the actor named is responsible for the steps in the assigned lane.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Steps in the diagram take a shape: <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Circle \u2192 start &amp; end ; <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Rectangle \u2192 an activity in proce<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">ss ; <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Diamond \u2192 a decision that needs to be made ; <\/span>Arrow \u2192 direction of the flow of the process ; <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Cylinder \u2192 stored data<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;font-size: 10pt\">Swimlanes are particularly useful to companies for identifying possible redundancies in the process, inefficiencies, or general problem areas.
