Students who fail to earn the required portfolio points will receive an “Incomplete” for this course regardless of performance on exams or class participation! See the MIS Department Portfolio Requirement section of this website for details.
Grades are always communicated to the student as a percentage – i.e. on a scale of 0 to 100.
Once a grade is communicated electronically students have a 1-week window of time in which they may email the instructor to question the grade received. Grade adjustments will not be considered after this window has closed. Of course, during the last week of the semester, study days, and finals week, the 1-week window may shorten. Grade adjustments will not be considered 48 hours after the last day of final exams.
Late assignment policy
Updated based on class vote 1/27:
No credit will be given for assignments turned in late.
Equipment failure is not an acceptable reason for turning in an assignment late.
Class attendance and participation policy
Attendance and participation are essential. Students are expected to attend class and participate by responding to instructor questions, asking for clarification on the course material where needed, and by completing in-class exercises.
The mechanism for determining attendance will be the submission of in-class exercises. Please note that any attempt to submit work on behalf of another student will be treated as a case of academic dishonesty and will have serious consequences for both students. See the “Plagiarism and Academic Dishonesty” portion of the syllabus for details.
It is usually not necessary to inform the instructor of absences, planned or otherwise.
If a student does miss class, it is the student’s responsibility to catch up on any missed material. While every student is encouraged to use office hours to gain a better understanding of class material, office hours are NOT for helping students catch up on material they missed because they were absent.
Finally, please be advised that the instructor may, at his/her discretion, deduct additional points from the attendance/participation grade of a student. A student who consistently fails to contribute to course-related conversation or who engages in classroom conduct that impedes the learning of other student can expect such a point deduction. This deduction will be applied at the sole discretion of the instructor, and without warning. This deduction may be applied to any student, regardless of the student’s attendance record.
In–class exercises
- In-class activities are to be completed and submitted by the end of the class.
- They will be graded based on completeness and correctness.
- They will be graded as follows:
- 100% – exercise is complete and correct
- 60% – exercise submitted, but incorrect / incomplete.
- 0% – no exercise submitted.
- Late submissions will not be accepted.
- Students can miss three exercise submissions without penalty.
- Please note – the reason for a missed submission doesn’t matter. Any missed submission – regardless of the reason – counts towards this total.
If this attendance policy presents a hardship due to illness or other dire circumstance, please inform the instructor and provide any requested documentation. Exceptions to the attendance policy are possible, but not likely.
