Assignment #1, ICA #2/3, and Class Next Week

January 24, 2019 Leave a Comment

Hi, all!

We have completed the ER modeling section in our course. Good job, everyone! It is time for our very first assignment. Instructions can be found on our course website by clicking Assignment 1: ER Modeling in the schedule table. Please remember to submit your answer by 9:30 am on Jan. 31st.

Also, we have finished the ICA #2 and please submit your answer by tonight at 11:59 pm. ICA #3 will be due by 11:59 pm next Tuesday after we complete it in class.

We will go from ERD to database schemas and try to realize all the ER modeling design through a relational database management system (RDBMS), MySQL, next week. I will assign the username and password for those who cannot find them listed on your Gradebook on the course website by this weekend.

Enjoy your weekend and see you next Tuesday morning!

Best,

Zhe(Joe) Deng

Class Capture Link and ERDPlus

January 22, 2019 Leave a Comment

Hi, all!

I just got our class capture link from FOX IT this afternoon. You can also find the link on our community website under LINKS in the sidebar.

The due of ICA 2 has been extended to this Thursday! We will do the ICA on our Thursday class! If you cannot wait to play with ERDPlus until our next class, try to get familiar with the platform and all the ER modeling we have covered so far, and then feel free to draw your very first ERD.

Remember to label the cardinality between entity A and entity B following the three steps:

  1. Read from entity A to the other entity B;
  2. First, consider the minimum cardinality of the A-to-B relationship and mark an “optional” relationship as “0”, or a “mandatory” one as “|” on the line connected to entity B;
  3. Then discuss the maximum cardinality of the A-to-B relationship and mark “one” as “|”, or “many” as “⚟” next to the minimum cardinality in step 2;
  4. Repeat 1 through 3 for B-to-A relationship.

TIPS:

  1. ONE relationship(diamond) can ONLY link TWO entities(rectangles). If one needs more connections, it should be a NEW entity! (E.g., transaction, order, record, etc.);
  2. Relationship attributes only exist for many-to-many relationship(Why? It is unnecessary to add a relationship attribute for a one-to-one/one-to-many relationship, we can simply add it as an entity attribute for the entity on the one side.) ;
  3. If a noun has no attribute in the requirement statement gathered from the user side, we do NOT model it as an entity.

Enjoy your night and look forward to seeing you all on Thursday!

Best,

Zhe (Joe) Deng

MySQL Database Username and Password Assigned!

January 16, 2019 Leave a Comment

Hi, all!

Hope you had a wonderful start of the semester! I have already assigned the MySQL database username and password to each of you. You then can find your pair in the Gradebook (https://community.mis.temple.edu/gradebook/) on our course website. This info allows you to get access to your dataset in MySQL after installing MySQL Workbench. Installation instructions can also be found on the course website. Please DO NOT modify the database after logging in. Changing the data may affect your running results in the future. We will NOT use MySQL Workbench until January. 29. Take your time to install the software!

We will cover the basic concepts of the relational database modeling and have our very first hands-on In-Class Activity(ICA) tomorrow morning. You may need a laptop and internet connection to submit the ICA via Canvas by 11:59 pm tomorrow.

Hope you enjoy the class and look forward to seeing you all!

Best,

Joe
