Throughout the semester we will complete a number of in-class activities. The directions for in-class activities and answer sheets that must be completed and submitted as assignments can be found here:
The following materials are required for the first week of class:
- You will need to set up an account on AWS. You will need to enter a credit card or debit card to create this account. We will be using the free tier for just about everything we do with AWS but there may be some nominal charges. We will also be working on getting each student AWS Educate credits to offset their cost of using AWS. Plan on spending less than $50 on AWS for the entire semester.
- You will be invited to join two AWS Academy Canvas courses by your instructor. These are called “Cloud Foundations” and “Cloud Developing”. These class materials are provided at no cost to the student by Amazon. In most weeks you will be required to view one of more videos from one or both of these courses before the start of class.
ChatGPT (optional)
ChatGPT is a large language model chatbot by OpenAI. It’s quite sophisticated at answering questions, including defining terms and writing and diagnosing code! You are welcome to sign up for an account and use it this semester (for example, you can ask it “What is a VPC in AWS?”). However, there are some rules:
- You can’t use it during exams. Exams are still closed book, closed notes.
- For coding assignments, you have to follow the style and substance of the examples and exercises given in this class.
Think of ChatGPT as another student in the class – you can ask for some friendly help with a specific issue, but you have to do your own work! You can always ask me or the ITA if you need a definitive answer!
Also, some caveats:
- Like everything else on the web, ChatGPT’s answers can be flat-out wrong, so be careful.
- It also won’t tell you the sources it used to inform its answer, which means you shouldn’t cite it as a source or use its answers verbatim or you could be inadvertently plagiarizing!
