This balancing act requires understanding organizational goals to deliver a positive user experience, while recognizing that often organizations and users do not fully know what they need and want. The following assignment will allow you to research an organization and analyze their current user experience. In part 3, you will design a new user experience that will build upon what you learned in parts 1 &amp; 2.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dropbox.com\/s\/6o6jzjn1zomgy27\/fall%202019%20site%20assignments.xlsx?dl=0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Fall 2019 Site Assignments<\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Part 1 \u2013 Project Research and Problem Definition<\/h2>\n<p>Each student will be assigned a website at random.<\/p>\n<p>Research the organization that owns the site. Include the mission of the organization, products and services, and target market. Answer the following questions:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>What are the goals of the site?<\/li>\n<li>What is the problem that the organization is trying to solve?<\/li>\n<li>Who are the intended users and what do you think the organization would like them to accomplish using the site? Can you create a persona of the typical user?<\/li>\n<li>What data does the site collect? Why do you think this data is collected?<\/li>\n<li>What changes to the current design would you propose based on your initial research?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Deliverables<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Slide deck that showcases research and findings. Include the following three slides (only):\n<ol>\n<li>Goals, problem being solved, and data<\/li>\n<li>Typical users<\/li>\n<li>Proposed changes<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li>Students will be selected at random at the beginning of class to present their findings to the class.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2>Part 2 \u2013 Usability Test &amp; Goals<\/h2>\n<p>Now that you have completed the initial research and have a better understanding of what the organization is trying to do, let\u2019s evaluate the user experience.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Conduct a usability test of\u00a0your assigned site.\n<ul>\n<li>Download and adapt this\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/sensible.com\/downloads-rsme.html\">usability test script.<\/a>\u00a0The script is generic, so you are required to adapt to your situation.<\/li>\n<li>Get\u00a0<strong>two\u00a0<\/strong>people other than yourself and excluding students in this class to participate in the usability test using your adapted usability test script. (Remember, you are now familiar with the goals of the site, but try hard not to influence the selected users!)<\/li>\n<li>Document the process and notes and include the notes as well as the modified test script as an appendix in your submission.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Create an ordered list of the most serious problems.\n<ul>\n<li>List and explain problems, not solutions. For example, \u201cit takes a long time to find relevant information because it is not logically organized\u201d is a problem vs. \u201cthe content should be better organized in menus\u201d which is a solution.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Frame the above problems as examples of the following Norman\u2019s concepts:\n<ul>\n<li>The different types and forms of errors (Ch. 5).<\/li>\n<li>Conflict among the designer\u2019s and user\u2019s conceptual and the system image (Ch. 1)<\/li>\n<li>Gulf of execution and evaluation (Ch. 2)<\/li>\n<li>Seven stages of action (Ch. 2)<\/li>\n<li>The three levels of processing (Ch. 2)<\/li>\n<li>Blame: The wrong thing, learned helplessness, oneself<\/li>\n<li>Note: As you work through the above, you will notice that one problem fits into multiple concepts. This is good as long as you identify the aspect of the problem that fits into that particular concept.<\/li>\n<li>You will be graded on how well you can take what you learned from the usability test above and abstract to Norman\u2019s concepts above.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Deliverables<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Slide deck limited to 7 slides highlighting all of above elements.<\/li>\n<li>Compare the problems framed using Norman\u2019s concepts to your proposed changes from Part 1. What does the comparison tell you about user experience design?<\/li>\n<li>Students will be selected at random at the beginning of class to present their findings to the class<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2><strong>Part 3 \u2013 Design<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><em>Part 3 includes three deliverables \u2013 alpha, beta, &amp; final solution<\/em><\/p>\n<p>In part 3, you will learn how to create a usable website using the Genesis framework. The deliverable for this project is a site which will demonstrate your knowledge of Genesis and the basics of user experience design. You should use the results of your research in Part 1 and usability test in Part 2 to create this site. Assume that you are the designer for the organization.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Genesis framework<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Genesis is a website design framework published by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.studiopress.com\/\">StudioPress<\/a>. For example, the main MIS Community site is built on top of the Genesis framework with the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/my.studiopress.com\/themes\/news\/\">NewsPro<\/a>\u00a0theme.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Temple has a site license to lynda.com which includes excellent step-by-step tutorials on how to use Genesis. To access these tutorials, visit\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/lynda.temple.edu\/\">https:\/\/lynda.temple.edu\/<\/a>and login using your Temple credentials<\/li>\n<li>Next click the following link:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lynda.com\/Genesis-tutorials\/Up-Running-Genesis-WordPress\/170289-2.html\">Learning Genesis for WordPress<\/a>(note: you must first login as specified above to benefit from the Temple site license).<\/li>\n<li>Please ignore the sections in the tutorial about Installing the Genesis Framework or working with templates.<\/li>\n<li>We will use a special project server\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/project.mis.temple.edu\/\">https:\/\/project.mis.temple.edu\/<\/a>available for this class. Students in this class will be able to automatically access this server using Temple AccessNet credentials.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>The server contains the Genesis framework and most of the themes produced by StudioPress.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Getting started<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Start watching the Lynda tutorial and experiment using your own site.<\/li>\n<li>To create a site, login to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/project.mis.temple.edu\/\">https:\/\/project.mis.temple.edu\/<\/a>hover on\u00a0<em>Hello,\u2026, Sites<\/em>, and click\u00a0<em>Create a Site<\/em>.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Click on the\u00a0<em>URL\u00a0<\/em>of the new site in the new message\/alert to visit it.<\/li>\n<li>Activate the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/demo.studiopress.com\/executive\/\">Executive Pro theme<\/a>\u00a0on your new site. This is the theme that the tutorial uses. Note: You will see the Genesis menu after you activate the theme.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Creating the site<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Create a site using one of the Genesis themes that improves on the site from parts 1 and 2.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Redesign the site you have researched in Parts 1 &amp; 2.<\/li>\n<li>Use Executive Pro or select a different theme. Some of the themes have specific instructions, contact the instructor for the documentation.<\/li>\n<li>The site should at the minimum contain the following.\n<ul>\n<li>A total of 6 pages or posts, with at least one of each. Each should have at least 100 words of content and one image. The titles and images should be appropriate and relevant. You can use filler text for the paragraphs.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Home page that includes the Genesis Featured Page widget or the Genesis Featured Post widget to feature relevant content.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Use the Genesis Responsive Slider on the home page to support the site goals.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>At least one menu including five menu items, and at least two sub-menus. It does not matter where you put the two sub-menus. However, all the menus should support the site goals.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Layout that uses at least one sidebar.<\/li>\n<li>Sidebar should include at the minimum the search widget and one other widget relevant to the site goals.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Relevant image logo in the header.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Alpha submission<\/h3>\n<p>The alpha submission should include a status update on all of the above activities and the following components.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Select the theme you are going to use for the redesign<\/li>\n<li>Justification on why this is the best theme for addressing the UX goals<\/li>\n<li>Draft home page that includes the Genesis Responsive Slider<\/li>\n<li>The menu structure and organization<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Submit the above as a PowerPoint document.<\/p>\n<h3>Beta submission<\/h3>\n<p>The beta submission should include a status update on all of the above activities and the following components.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Demonstration of the complete design<\/li>\n<li>Results of two usability tests<\/li>\n<li>How you will improve the design based on the usability tests<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Submit the above as a PowerPoint document.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h3>Final solution submission<\/h3>\n<p>Create a Word file that includes the following:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>The URL of the new site.<\/li>\n<li>A one-page reflection that includes a list and justification of how your site applies the following concepts:\n<ol>\n<li>Affordances<\/li>\n<li>Signifiers<\/li>\n<li>Constraints<\/li>\n<li>Conventions<\/li>\n<li>Knowledge in the head vs. the world<\/li>\n<li>Mapping<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li>The due date is before class per the date listed on the schedule. If you miss the due date, you will lose one letter grade.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Submit the file in your OWLbox folder.<\/li>\n<li>All students will present the project in class during the last week of classes (12\/2 &amp; 12\/4).\u00a0 Each student will have exactly 3.5 minutes to present.\u00a0 You do not need a PowerPoint deck for the final presentation, simply an overview of your new website.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2>Status reports in class<\/h2>\n<p>You will be asked to provide status updates in class. The status updates are informal and free flowing with no set time length or format.
