  • In my opinion, I believe that a standard stifle innovation and creativity is because people will follow the standard and believe that it’s the best for them. For example, education, in most Asian countries, they believe that in order to have a better life, you need to be well educated and must be good at a subject like math, science, language in order to have a better life. Due to this standard, most Asian students don’t have any time to do whatever they want or have free time, and because of this standard, asian students lack ideas with innovation and creativity compare with U.S students. Unlike any Asian countries, U.S education is more about freedom and it’s more about how do develop your creativity on the stuff you like. The more free time you have, the greater imagination you will have, and this is how we creat the innovation and the creativity.

  • Another example of a standard payment system will be Apple pay. Through Apple pay, we don’t need to pull out our credit card anymore, and it’s much easier and faster than before.

  • Other examples of standards we’re enjoying in our everyday life are the credit system (credit card), internet, automobile, and education. These are almost necessary and certainly improves our way of life.

  • Other examples of payment systems are Paypal, Venmo, Snapchat Pay, Chase quick pay, and Apple Pay.

  • I think that one interesting example of payment systems could be recurring payments for subscription services like Netflix or Apple Music. These services automatically charge you every month until they are cancelled. This is convenient because otherwise you would have to constantly mail in checks to pay for these services.

Some standards that we might take for granted in our daily lives are internet standards. Without internet standards, it would be very difficult to view different websites on different devices. Many things online that we take for granted as compatible might no longer be compatible.

  • What are the other examples of standard we’re enjoying in our everyday life (other than language, currency, railroad, power outlet)?
US, Asia, Some countries in Europe adopt Right-hand Traffic.

What should be changed if the U.S. adopts the Metric System as in other countries?
The educational system should be changed to enable adaptation to metric system. All the signs used need to be changed. All documentations need to be changed.

Other examples of a standard payment system such as E-Zpass or SmarTrip?
Example of standard payment system: Diamond dollar.

By adopting one standard technology for all employees/units (e.g. Microsoft Windows, Oracle database, SAP ERP), what would be the risks?
The company is not flexible to adapt to technology advancement; therefore. it might lose opportunities to enlarge market or upgrade business size

  • Other examples of a standard payment system such as E-Zpass or SmarTrip?
The other examples of a standard payment system will be Apple Pay, Paypal, Android Pay, Credit Card (Visa, Master)

By adopting one standard technology for all employees/units (e.g. Microsoft Windows, Oracle database, SAP ERP), what would be the risks?
By adopting one standard technology will cause the company lose flexibility of data control or system control. Some data might operate by some applications. Some business have to use different technologies because of business entity. One risk might be if the standard technology the company adopt can not compete with another technology. For large company it will be high switching cost to change to another technology. The company might totally lose and bankruptcy. Another risk might be limit certain opportunity or market expanding.

  • 1. What are the other examples of standard we’re enjoying in our everyday life (other than language, currency, railroad, power outlet)?

One example of standard we’re enjoying in our everyday life is the credit system and GPA system in college.

    2. Why does a standard stifle innovation and creativity?

Having a standard can help people to measure things in an easier way, but it also denied other possible solutions or metrics. For example, we used GPA system in college to measure the performance of students. GPA system is a unify grade system in the U.S. and it is easy to follow and calculate. However, having a standard grade system to measure performance also excludes other factors, such as leadership and extracurricular activities. A standard could stifle innovation and creativity because a student could satisfy his/her gpa score and choose not to develop other skills like leadership, teamwork or innovation. In this case, a college maybe training people in only one way.

  • Other examples of a standard payment system such as E-Zpass or SmarTrip?
i would say starbuck’s application. a user is allowed to prepaid or auto reload a certain amount of money so that you can pay more easily with just a scan from the barcode on your device.

What are the other examples of standard we’re enjoying in our everyday life (other than language, currency, railroad, power outlet)?
I would have to say we take central A/C or heater for granted in the US. I am originally from Hong Kong and without central heating/ A/C is very difficult to stay warm/cold throughout the night.

  • If the USA changes to the metric system, the labels on containers must change, the system the schools teach must change, and the weight measurements would change to the metric standard.

Another form of standard payment system is Samsung pay. It takes in credit and debit cards into the mobile payment format and uses a signal that the magnetic strip card reader can read. This allows Samsung pay to be used in almost any type of card readers.
