April 19, 2024

I decided to mix things up a bit… see the class schedule.

Also, I will post an exam 2 study guide by the end of the day.

For our discussion today … here are the “8 Questions that will shape the future of AI” that you have seen previously.

  1. Will A.I. have and adverse impact on the 2024 election?
  2. Will AI be curbed by US regulation?
  3. Will Europe succeed in regulating AI?
  4. Is there any prospect of a system of global governance for AI?
  5. Can China catch up in the AI race?
  6. Is AI the new Manhattan Project?
  7. How much energy will an AI world need?
  8. What will AI mean for the future of war?

MIS3580 – Agenda for class on 4/12

April 11, 2024

In today’s class we are going to use an AI-powered Excel Add-In to do Sentiment Analysis.

The data set is found at http://tinyurl.com/shaferaicourse in the Workplace3 folder.

The Excel Add-In we want to use is a product of Meaning Cloud: https://www.meaningcloud.com/

We *should* be able to use Office365 / Excel 365 for this one. Let’s see how it goes…

OTHER NOTES:

MIS3580 – Agenda for class on 4/8

April 8, 2024

Here’s the plan for class:

#1 – Important announcement for next week.

#2 – Discussion

Here are some key remarks from the listening:

Principles for Rebuilding Organizations with AI:

  1. Allow teams to develop their own AI integration methods, fostering ethical experimentation and shared learning.
  2. Build processes with future AI advancements in mind, preparing for rapid technological evolution.
  3. Act swiftly to integrate AI, as delays could result in falling behind in efficiency and innovation.

I’m going to ask for your help in reinventing the “project meeting”

My plan is to work collaboratively with you all on Assignment 3 today.

We will get started with the content found here!

Who knows?  If you focus you might be able to get the assignment done *today*.  Wouldn’t that be nice?

Also – here are the five podcast episodes that will be reflected in the content of your final exam:

  1. What Roles Should the Government Play in AI? (1/22/2024)
  2. The Surprising Way AI Will Make Us Value “Soft Skills” (2/27/2024)
  3. AI Is Transforming How We Interact With Computers (3/18/2024)
  4. Why Boring AI is Driving Adoption (4/1/2024)
  5. How to Redesign Organizations for the AI Era (4/8/2024)

MIS3580 – Agenda for class on 4/3

(And – Assignment 3 is *not* due tonight.)

MIS3580 – Agenda for class 4/1

April 1, 2024

Review this video (as a way to wrap up last week)

https://youtu.be/7-f7rPdj6tI?si=tMfAzHgV6PedzL6K

Discuss – “Why Boring AI is driving Adoption”

  • The disparity between what’s exciting / and what is actually used?
    • Personal examples of this?
  • Is NLW right?  Are AI users never going back?
  • Is Ethan Mollick right?  Do people really hate boring jobs?

A sneak peek at assignment 5.

MIS3580 – Agenda for class on 3/29

March 29, 2024

RECAP:

Our chief take-away from last class was (roughly) this:

  • Generative AI isn’t magic all by itself, but when you combine it with good prior knowledge it becomes very powerful.

We’ll talk a little bit more about AI and Programming on Monday, but until then here’s an interesting perspective on AI and programming: https://youtu.be/TjfWEajoESc?si=9zGCbNQBmBwUc0tQ.  ( The comments on this video are as interesting as the video itself!)

TODAY:

I have a different sort of activity planned for our time together today.  Students will be invited to use one of these four LLM platforms to perform a writing assignment.

  1. https://chat.openai.com   (v 4.0)
  2. https://chat.mistral.ai/chat
  3. https://chat.openai.com/ (v 3.5)
  4. https://claude.ai/chat

LOOKING AHEAD:

Here are four podcast episodes that will be reflected in the content of your final exam:

I will add one more episode to this list before the end of the semester.

Finally, I will announce Assignment 3 next week.  It will involve using the “Analyze Data” feature in excel, and contrasting that with the “Data Insight Engineer” GPT hosted on chatGPT.

MIS3580 – Agenda for class on 3/26

March 26, 2024

I have a different sort of activity planned for our time together today.  Students will be invited to use one of these three LLM platforms to perform a coding assignment (without having to code!)

  1. https://chat.openai.com   (v 4.0)
  2. https://chat.mistral.ai/chat
  3. https://chat.openai.com/ (v 3.5)

This is for participation only … if your code does not work, you won’t be penalized.

What I *do* want to see is effort!

Other announcements:

  • Today is the last day to vote for your “favorite” podcast episode: https://forms.gle/GEp5rEqteRWUYrnM6
  • Friday’s class will be conducted via zoom.  No in-person class this Friday.
