I was lucky enough to intern 0ver the summer, therefore I didn’t need to balance schoolwork with my internship. However, I did maintain a part-time job alongside my internship and throughout the academic year. The best tip I have for balancing various aspects of life is solid time-management. I like to use Notion, Teams Calendar, and iOS Calendar. Notion serves as my “school hub”, helping me to organize daily tasks and keep track of assignment deadlines, course information, academic goals, and my schedule. Teams Calendar allows me to time-block my internship responsibilities and meetings. iOS Calendar keeps me updated on personal events such as work days, social plans, and birthdays. I found that separating my work, school, internship, and personal commitments has proven to be extremely beneficial. Utilizing digital time management tools has been a game-changer, especially throughout my college experience!
My internship took place over the summer so I did not have to deal with balancing school work at the same time. Although, being a student-athlete has taught be how to have a healthy balance in school/work/sports/etc. I have found that good time-management skills and organization are key to maintaining a good work process. Set deadlines, planners, online calendars, and progress trackers are very beneficial. Over the summer, I was juggling two different projects at once. Having a progress tracker to determine what has been done, what needs to be done, and what will be done was helpful to understand which tasks are priority. I also have found that utilizing outlook calendar as much as possible is extremely beneficial. The application has many different tools and options to optimize my experience and keep me on track.
To balance my schoolwork and internship, I’ve developed a strategy centered around organization and self-care. I prioritize my tasks and use a digital calendar to keep track of deadlines and commitments, allowing me to focus on what’s most urgent. Clear, achievable goals are set for both areas, breaking down larger tasks into smaller steps to avoid feeling overwhelmed. Open communication with my professors and internship supervisor is crucial; it ensures that they understand my commitments and can offer flexibility when necessary. I also try to integrate my learning experiences from both settings, applying academic concepts to practical situations at my internship and bringing real-world experiences into my school . Lastly, I’m not afraid to seek support, whether it’s academic assistance or just talking through my stresses with friends and family. This holistic approach helps me stay balanced, productive, and healthy while juggling both schoolwork and an internship.
Balancing working while going to school was definitely a challenge, but now that it’s the second semester, I’ve gotten used to it. The biggest thing that helped me was stacking my classes, so I am able to work 3 days a week and go to my classes 2 times a week. This also helped put me in the right mindset or whether or not it was a “working” or “school” day.
Planning ahead is also very helpful. I’m grateful that I have very understanding managers who have emphasized to me to always prioritize school over work. So, if I know I have a busy week at school coming soon, I will communicate that with them ahead of time and they have been very accommodating with my schedule.
Another tool that has been super helpful for me is google calendar. I like the visual aspect of being able to see how my day is structured and it helps me with future planning too. I also use Google Keep as an add-on to my calendar so that I can write out a daily to do list. On top of that, I imported my Canvas calendar into Google so everything I need is in one central location.
