As an intern specializing in data analysis and visualization, I utilized various tools such as Tableau, SQL, and Excel. I first learned the basics of Tableau in MIS 0855: Data Science. This course actually sparked my interest in data visualization, which ultimately drew me to this internship opportunity. Although it is not part of the MIS curriculum, the skills I gained from this course set me up for success in this role. I also had previous knowledge of SQL from MIS 2502: Data & Analytics. This became extremely useful as most of the company data was stored in MySQL. This streamlined the data cleansing and manipulation process. I also had continued exposure to Excel in many courses such as BA 2104: Excel Business Applications and MSOM 3101: Operations Management. This allowed me to easily filter basic datasets. In leveraging the knowledge and skills I acquired in the classroom, I was able to enhance my overall internship experience!
During my internship, I extensively utilized the knowledge I acquired from MIS 2101, particularly about Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems. In the classroom, we delved into the intricacies of ERP systems, learning about their critical role in integrating diverse business processes, streamlining data flow, and enhancing overall organizational efficiency. This theoretical groundwork was crucial when I encountered ERP systems in the real-world business environment of my internship.
At my internship, I was actively involved in projects that required interacting with various components of the ERP system. The concepts I learned in MIS 2101, such as modules for finance, procurement, inventory management, and human resources, became directly applicable. I could understand the system’s architecture and how it facilitated seamless communication between different departments, leading to more informed decision-making and strategic planning.
My classroom learning about the importance of data accuracy and real-time information in ERPs helped me in maintaining the integrity of data inputs and analyzing data outputs. This not only improved the efficiency of business processes I was involved with but also increased my ability to contribute to team objectives. The transition from theoretical knowledge to practical application was seamless, and it underscored the value of the comprehensive ERP education I received in MIS 2101, making my internship experience both productive and enriching.
Learning SQL in MIS2502/Data and Analytics has been super beneficial for my work as a Manufacturing Planner. I frequently write queries through SAP to help extract data. I’ve been able to simplify a lot of my processes through implementing queries. I would also say that learning to use excel in multiple classes, like Excel for Business Applications and Statistics, has been very valuable. It’s a tool I use on a daily basis, and it is super valuable when you know how to utilize all of its different functions.
On the flip side, I would say that I’ve been able to leverage my work experience in the classroom. For MSOM specifically, I didn’t struggle with having to conceptualize everything because I had work experiences I could use to understand the classroom material.
In the classroom, I have learned the importance of taking notes and staying on top of the work that is being given. Especially in college courses, professors give students more independence in completing assignments in their own timely manner. For example, in Cybersecurity, labs were not due every week rather due once in the middle of the semester. It became a responsibility for me to stay on track, despite a required due date. At Accenture, there are often due dates but is important to stay on top of things and to not procrastinate until the last minute to complete all work. I also have found that note taking in the class is beneficial to my internship. Being on meetings with different departments and clients all day long has showed that it is important to take notes. There is so much information being given throughout the day and I can’t expect to remember everything off the top of my head. Similar to classes, materials aren’t always given to us so we must hold ourselves accountable to take down and retain the information given to us.
