Course Structure Overview

The goal of MIS 4596 is to integrate the MIS and Business School curriculum so that students understand the overall role of MIS in the organization. At the broadest level this means:

  • Learn how to leverage and think about enterprise level information technology assets and capabilities.
  • Apply systems thinking as a basic principle in thinking about enterprise IT
  • Justify and prioritize project portfolios at the enterprise level.
  • Propose, compare, and evaluate specific projects.
  • Learn how IT organizations are structured
  • Understand the role of the MIS professional
  • Gain expertise on what it takes to work on (an entrepreneurial) team project from start to finish.

The course is structured into three key learning components:

  • Co-create: Generate knowledge in collaboration with the instructor and other students. Go beyond just reading or discussion which are valuable but focus only on reaction.   • Learnathon: Get maximum value from each class session which include a mix of face to face and online sessions that integrate lectures, activities, breakouts, discussion, guest experts, and completion of a concrete learning goal.   • Meetup: Collaborate, coordinate, and manage team members and projects. Learning is at heart a social activity, most people learn best when they engage with others, which is the meetup concept. Professors Carey O’Donnell and James Moustafellos have developed previous iterations of the course. The current version of the course was co-developed by Professors Hohne and Mandviwalla.
