Case Study Analysis

Prepare an in-depth analysis of the following case studies during the semester. The guidelines are:

  • Answer all the questions listed below for each case.
  • The ‘answers’ to the questions are best formulated by reviewing the case and reviewing the relevant reading materials.
  • The questions are worded to help you apply the readings to the case, so don’t limit yourself to the case’s terminology and perspective. The best analysis will abstract the case content by applying the reading materials to draw broader lessons about the material.


Summarize your analysis in a set of no more than 5 PowerPoint slides. Title slide does not count agains the total.  Use the main slides to communicate the key points in a concise and direct manner. You may use the “notes” section on PowerPoint to add more detail and justification. Do not fill the main slides with text. The slides should (a) apply class materials, and (b) include a balanced perspective which explains both the rationale for a recommendation (the why), and any potential risks (the downsides).

The process for submitting your case study analysis is as follows:

  • Submit the case study analysis via Owlbox – no later than 7:00 am the day the case study is to be discussed in class.
  • The file should be in Microsoft Powerpoint (.ppt or pptx) format. No other format or style of submission is acceptable.
  • Be Prepared. You may be asked to lead a discussion about the case using your slides.
  • Late submissions will not receive assignment credit.  Assignment must be completed to receive a course grade.

Grading Criteria

  • Ability to answer all the stated questions in an integrated and comprehensive manner
  • Ability to creatively and successfully apply class and external materials
  • Provides a balanced perspective that includes both pros and cons and conclusions in the analysis
  • Good use of the ‘deck’ as a medium of communication

IT at Cirque du Soleil

You are working as an analyst for a company that is assessing how well Cirque du Soleil is supported by IT.  You are specifically being asked to focus on the following areas and present your findings back to your management.  Follow the criteria above to formulate your report and presentation.

  • Describe how the touring show life cycle is supported by IT. Translate the figure (figure 2) in the case to describe the lifecycle using terms and concepts from your prior courses.
  • What is/are the ‘system(s)’ at Cirque du Soleil? Identify and explain the specific type of system(s) and justify.
  • What are the key business processes in the touring show life cycle? Identify the specific processes and map them to more generic, universal processes found across businesses (refer to your prior courses).
  • Is IT at Cirque du Soleil ‘successful’? Why? Why not? Justify your answer by identifying the appropriate criteria for defining success and evaluate CdS using that criteria.
    • What are your insights?
    • What improvements, if any, would you recommend?
    • Do you agree with the approach taken by Danielle Savoie, VP – IT?  Explain.


You are working as an analyst for a company that is assessing the organization and its evolution at Wyeth.  You are specifically being asked to focus on the following areas and present your findings back to your management.  Follow the criteria above to formulate your report and presentation.

  • What is the final enterprise architecture at Wyeth (at the end of the case)? Use the systems architecture framework from the reading materials to formulate your answer.
  • Describe the evolution of Wyeth using the concept of organizational structure. What ‘type’ did Wyeth IT start with? What did it end with? Did they end up with the best organizational structure for the company, or would you suggest a better ‘type’? Make sure you justify your answer with a clear rationale.
  • Describe the Wyeth IT organization using the Gartner ‘Built-to-Purpose IT Organization’ framework. Identify the type of line management, delivery role, and governance model. Which one of the four ‘ideal’ types does Wyeth fit best in (engine room, global service providers, IS the business, Everyone’s IT)? Why? Would a different organizational IT structure work better moving forward (at the completion of the case period)? How?
  • Evaluate the Wyeth organization experience from a change management perspective using the Kotter model from MIS3535 (or another with instructor approval).  How well did they execute against the model?  Justify what would you do similarly or differently?   What was the single most significant IT contribution to change management.  Explain.”

Case 3 –

Emerging Technology / Disruptive Innovation

This case is intended to expand on the concepts of disruptive innovation discussed in class.  The goal of this case is to highlight how a new technology or new application of an existing technology is being deployed in a manner that is or will have significant impact on the general market.  There are no formal readings.  Further direction will be provided in class.

  • Work with your project team to select a topic and present to your instructor for approval
  • Conduct research and provide a one-two page power point summary to describe the topic and provide an issue question.
  • Describe the evolution of the “market” based on the disruptive innovation cycle. Appropriately defining, scoping, describing the market(s) is a key challenge in this project.
  • Name the specific disruptions using Christensen’s’ terminology and describe how they will impact the above market(s).
  • Look into the future and predict the future of the market. What factors support your projections.
  • How will you cost-justify / evaluate the use the technology in the context of the above recommendations? Be specific with regard to both tangible and intangible costs/ risks and benefits.
  • Teams will present a consensus case presentation to the class.
  • Team members will submit a Personal Reflection – One Page in Powerpoint. Use as much text as required to indicate what you learned and provide your perspective and insight.  Indicate whether you agree or disagree with the conclusions of your team?  Normal presentation rules do not apply to your reflection.
  • In additional to the normal case learning objective, the goal of this exercise is to provide the team an opportunity to collaborate on a deliverable and to practice presentation skills prior to the your final project.  Because each team will present a topic, it is also an opportunity to expand the knowledge of the class on the topic.
