This month Alibaba announced the development of an AI tool for the identification of fake news. The company claims that its “Rumor Shredder” can verify the authenticity of information with an accuracy of 81%. Developed at Alibaba’s DAMO Academy, the AI first validates the source of the information, checking the content creator’s record for authenticity in the past. It then validates the platform where the information was published; for example, Chinese state-run media sources would be considered trustworthy. Finally, the veracity of the information itself is checked against a database of already verified articles. Many are concerned with the accuracy of Alibaba’s new AI and the true intent behind its development. In an interview with Epoch Times Li Yuanhua, former assistant professor at China Capital Normal University, voiced concerns that the tool would be used by the Chinese government to suppress dissident views, pointing out that Xinhua, one of the sources Alibaba defines as credible, is part of the Chinese government’s propaganda apparatus.
