Case Analysis

You must prepare an in-depth analysis of three case studies during the semester according to the following guidelines:

  1. Read the case carefully and use the course materials to formulate your answer.
  2. Answer all the questions for each case.
  3. The analysis should a) apply class and other materials, and b) include a balanced perspective which explains both the rationale for a recommendation (the why), and any potential risks (the downsides).
  4. Summarize your analysis in no more than 5 PowerPoint slides – you can use “Notes” section underneath the slide to provide more detailed information and commentary.

You need to buy the cases (and a couple of readings) from the Harvard Business Publishing (17$) through this link :  Course Pack

How to submit the analysis?

  1. Submit the PowerPoint document via OWLbox no later than 7:00 am the day the case study is to be discussed in class (submission address provided under each case below).
  2. Be prepared to present – you may be asked to lead a discussion about the case using your slides.

NOTE! Late submissions will receive zero credit, but you must complete all case analyses to receive a course grade.

Grading

An effective analysis typically abstracts the case content by applying ideas, concept and frameworks from external materials to draw broader lessons, that is, you should not limit yourself to the terminology and perspective found in the case document itself.

More specifically, the grading will focus on the following issues:

  1. Ability to answer all the stated questions in an integrated and comprehensive manner
  2. Ability to creatively and successfully apply class and external materials
  3. Provides a balanced perspective that discusses the case from multiple perspectives (e.g. pros and cons) and offers meaningful conclusions from the analysis
  4. Good use of the slide deck as a medium of communication

NOTE! Late submissions will receive zero credit, but you must complete all case analyses to receive a course grade.

Case 1: “Cirque du Soleil” Questions

  1. Describe how CdS’s information technology supports the touring show life cycle. Using Figure 2 in the case, describe the life cycle using terms and concepts from your prior courses.
  2. What is/are the “system(s)” at Cirque du Soleil? Identify and explain the specific type of system(s) using terms and concepts you have learned on this and on your previous courses.
  3. What are the key business processes in the touring show life cycle? Identify the specific processes and map them to more generic, universal processes found across businesses (again, refer to your prior courses).
  4. Is IT at Cirque du Soleil “successful”? Why or why not? Justify your answer by identifying the appropriate criteria for defining success and evaluate CdS using that criteria.

Submission: Save your ppt with the naming convention LastName_First Name_4596Section2_Case1 and email it from your Temple email account to:  Case_An.ltvy41bz7od80p0f@u.box.com

Case 2: “Tesla Motors” Questions

  1. Describe the evolution of Tesla using the theory of disruptive innovation.
  2. How does Tesla’s strategy differ from traditional car manufacturers? Whose approach is better?
  3. What kind of a role digital technology plays on Tesla’s strategy?

Case 3: AI/ML/analytics case of your choice – Instructions

The goal of this case is to apply disruptive innovation theory to the technologies associated with artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), or business analytics.

There is no specified case reading – instead, you must do your own research:

  1. Start with Gartner reports “Predicts 2018: Artificial Intelligence” (G00343423) and “A Framework for Applying AI in the Enterprise” (G00336031). Use the reports to narrow your focus to a specific aspect of technology, industry, or other reasonable subset.
  2. Do research using the Temple Library site (the Summon search tool on the library’s main page is a good place to start) and by googling
  3. To get credit for your own research, you must list the sources in a bibliography in a separate slide at the end (this slide does not count toward the slide limit).

In your analysis, make sure you pay attention to the following:

  1. Defining the scope of analysis – try to focus on a particular type of ML/AI/analytics technology.
  2. Describe the evolution of the market based on the disruptive innovation theory. Make sure you appropriately define, scope, and describe the market(s) – this is a key challenge of this analysis.
  3. Name the specific disruptions using Christensen’s’ terminology and describe how they will impact the market(s) you identify.
  4. What recommendations regarding technology would you make to incumbents in the industry?
  5. How would you cost-justify / evaluate the use of this technology in the context of the above recommendations? Be specific with regard to both tangible and intangible costs and benefits.

Submission: Save your ppt with the naming convention LastName_First Name_4596Section2_Case3 and email it from your Temple email account to:  Case_An.hpk0rpeci6849j19@u.box.com
