In class we talked about disruptive innovation and how technology is having a huge impact on consumers and how they function on a daily basis. The smart home is a concept where everything in your home is connected to the internet and consumer can access different appliances, household tools, and utilities from their smartphone. This smart home also consists of the lithium-powered batteries that are strong enough to power the whole entire house with clean energy. Tesla Motors is the first company to release this home-powering battery and has had consumers switching over to this innovative way. However, this article I read talks about how energy storage experts are not convinced of Elon Musk’s new toy. Panasonic, who is the supplier of the lithium-ion cells used in Tesla’s battery, believe that this is the beginning of a disruptive innovation, which has its risks. One of the main risks is the affect the battery can have on the environment. These lithium-ion cells are difficult to recycle and cannot be broken down easily. With this market expected to grow in the trillions, this will result in a ton of batteries, which will result in a ton of battery components to deal with. Knowing this, Telsa has to come up with a solution quickly in order for this new innovation to damage our already damaged world.
- Do you think Tesla’s home battery will grow to the point where it will have a noticeable effect on our environment?
- How can Tesla fix this risk without losing money?
Snap Inc is expected to spend $1 billion over the next five years to use Amazon Inc’s cloud services. Snap will stay in their $2 billion contract with Google to use their cloud services. Snap has been using Google Cloud to host the majority of its computing, storage, and bandwidth. The deal they made with Amazon involves Snap’s plan to improve its customer’s experience outside North America and Europe. The regions outside these two areas tend to have slower and more expensive cellular networks making it harder to connect with consumers. Consumers in these countries tend to be more interested in consuming content rather than creating it. This makes it easier for Snap’s competitors to target them. Snap is hoping this deal with Amazon will help them attract and retain these consumers. It will be interesting to see how this works out for Snap.
- How can Amazon Inc.’s cloud services improve Snap’s user experience in the regions outside North America and Europe?
- With having contracts with two different organization’s for its cloud services, should Snap consider building its own infrastructure?
CVS Health has started a Digital Innovation Lab in Boston, MA focused on the improvement of the relationship between their customers and their healthcare. CVS Health started this lab with the purpose of changing the way healthcare is delivered to their customers. They believe going digital is at the heart of this transformation. Going digital will help customers stay on their medication schedule, provide updates on their prescriptions, and discounts for their medication. These enhancements will be programed into CVS Health’s mobile app, which they already use for retail purposes. CVS Health is on its way to improve the relationship between their customers and their healthcare like no other organization has done before. However, as being the first organization to attempt this adventure, there are some questions that can be asked.
1) What else can this digital innovation include to improve the customer and healthcare relationship?
2) Are there any other channels (other than digital) that could be more effective?
