Tools and Foundational Technical Training

This site is under construction and all content is subject to formal review and approval.

To prepare yourself for the Temple ITACS program, it is highly recommended that you get familiar with the tools and technology that will be used throughout the program.  Follow these steps to download many of the tools that will be used throughout the program.

Register for Temple University’s “On The Hub” Software Discount Program

Temple has partnerships with software providers to allow students to download and install free software.  Click here to learn more about how to register and navigate Temple University’s Academic Software Center.

Install VMware Workstation

VMware Workstation is one of the more popular Hypervisor products available to build virtual machines used throughout the Temple ITACS program and is available to download for free via Temple University’s Academic Software Center.  Click here to learn more about hypervisor software and for instructions on how to download and install VMWare.8

Install and update Kali Linux

Kali Linux is a free Linux distribution that includes over 600 pre-installed penetration testing applications, including nmap, Wireshark, Metasploit, Armitage, Burp suite, John the Ripper password crackers.  Click here for more information on Kali Linux, including instructions and resources to download, install, and begin using this powerful distro.

Install and update a Windows VM

Throughout the program you will need to spin up virtual Windows machines using OS images that are available for free via Temple University’s Academic Software Center.  Click here for instructions on how to download and install a Windows virtual machine using VMware Workstation.

Learn the Basics of Linux command line

One of the most important skills you should develop to prepare yourself for the ITACS Cyber Security program is a fundamental knowledge and skill-set using Linux/UNIX command line.  Click here for more resources on learning and practicing Linux/UNIX command line.

Learn the Basics of Windows DOS and Powershell

While students will primarily use Linux/UNIX command line throughout the program, it is also recommended to understand more about Windows Command Prompt and Powershell.  Click here to learn more about Windows DOS and Powershell.

Learn the Basics of Wireshark

Wireshark is a free and open source packet analyzer. It is used for network troubleshooting, analysis, software and communications protocol development, and education.   There are versions for Windows, Mac, and Linux.  Click here to learn more and get started.
