Jim Watanabe, manager of the \u201cNo Customer Escapes\u201d project, and assistant director of IT for Petrie Electronics, was sitting in the company cafeteria. He had just finished his house salad and was about to go back to his office when Stephanie Welch sat down at his table. Jim had met Stephanie once, back when he started work at Petrie. He remembered she worked for the database administrator.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cHi, Jim, remember me?\u201d she asked.<\/span><\/p>\n

Sure, Stephanie, how are you? How are things in database land?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cCan\u2019t complain. Sanjay asked me to talk to you about the database needs for your new customer loyalty system.\u201d Stephanie\u2019s phone beeped. She pulled it out of her oversize bag and looked at it. She started to text as she continued to talk to Jim. \u201cHow far along are you on your database requirements?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

That\u2019s kind of rude, Jim thought. Oh well. \u201cWe are still in the early stages. I can send you a very preliminary E-R diagram we have, along with a description of the major entities.\u201d<\/span>
\n\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

\u201cOK, that will help. I suspect that you won\u2019t have too many new entities to add to what\u2019s already in the system,\u201d Stephanie responded, still looking at her phone and still texting. She briefly looked up at Jim and smiled slightly before going back to texting. \u201cJust send the E-R to me, and I\u2019ll let you know if I have any questions.\u201d She stood up, still looking at her phone. \u201cGotta go,\u201d she said, and she walked away.<\/span><\/p>\n

OK, Jim thought, I need to remember to send Stephanie the preliminary E-R we have. I should probably send her the entity descriptions too, just in case. Jim stood up, carried his tray over to the recycling area of the cafeteria, and went back to his office.<\/span><\/p>\n

When Jim got back to his office, Sanjay was waiting for him.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve got more information on those alternatives we talked about earlier,\u201d Sanjay said. \u201cI had one of my employees gather some data on how the alternatives might satisfy our needs.\u201d (See the descriptions of the alternatives at the end of Chapter 6 .) Sanjay handed Jim a short report. \u201cThe matrix shows the requirements and constraints for each alternative and makes it relatively easy to compare them.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

\u201cThe matrix favors the XRA CRM system,\u201d Jim said, after looking over the report. \u201cIt looks like their proposal meets our requirements the best, but the Nova group\u2019s proposal does the best job with the constraints.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cYes, but just barely,\u201d Sanjay said. \u201cThere is only a five point difference between XRA and Nova, so they are pretty comparable when it comes to constraints. But I think the XRA system has a pretty clear advantage in meeting our requirements.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cXRA seems to be pretty highly rated in your matrix in terms of all of the requirements. You have them ranked better than the other two proposals for implementation, scalability, and vendor support,\u201d Jim said. \u201cThe \u20185\u2019 you gave them for proven performance is one of the few \u20185\u2019s you have in your whole matrix.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s because they are one of the best companies in the industry to work with,\u201d Sanjay responded. \u201cTheir reputation is stellar.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThis looks really promising,\u201d Jim said. \u201cLet\u2019s see if reality matches what we have here. It\u2019s time to put together the formal request for proposal. I\u2019ll get that work started today. I hope that all three of these companies decide to bid.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
