October 8, 2018 by Sev Shirozian 4 Comments

The Wi-Fi Alliance group that manages the implementation of WiFi has announced that the next version of WiFi standard will be called WiFi 6 instead of 802.11ax.

They also announced they are changing older versions to this new simplified way as well.

  • 802.11b → Wi-Fi 1
  • 802.11a → Wi-Fi 2
  • 802.11g → Wi-Fi 3
  • 802.11n → Wi-Fi 4,
  • 802.11ac (current) → Wi-Fi 5

They are also going to have new corresponding icons to go with each one to make it easier for users.

Ah, so they are taking the Apple naming scheme? It sounds funny or even unnecessary but it is most certainly be more consumer friendly. I think the icons are well designed and high in contrast for any visual impairment. I don’t know what to think about the name WiFi but that was created long before this name scheme.

This will definitely be more friendly to the masses when it comes to educating them their wireless security.

    Hi Sev

It is good to have the upgraded generation of WIFI, because it will help users understand which version of wifi their devices support. They can upgrade their devices for the newest version of wifi. It is a good way to let the devices use the latest wifi capabilities.

CISA and CISSP exams should adopt the new standard immediately. The old name scheme is extremely confusing and takes forever to memorize. 🙂

The new standard for naming Wi-Fi is much clearer and easier to read and remember.
