ITACS 5211: Introduction to Ethical Hacking

Nearly Half of Americans Willing to Give Brands a Pass for a Data Breach

October 24, 2018 by Connor Fairman 1 Comment

I chose this article because I thought it was funny how the title seems to directly contradict the argument of the last article I posted, which stated that Americans are avoiding companies that get hacked in greater numbers than before. On the other hand, the article focuses on companies that experience data breaches, and not necessarily the theft of customer funds or payment information. This seems to support my suspicion that people care a lot more about a hack involving their wallet, and care much less about hackers gaining access to their personal information.

Connor, I think i fall within the forgiving 50% myself. After all, name a company that hasn’t had a security incident! The only companies that have not had one don’t exist yet! So if you don’t give them a pass, there’s a high probability you are just going to go to another company that provided a similar service that has also been breached or you have decided to give up on technology and end up going off the grid! (highly unlikely)

People have become immune to their data being hacked. At the end of the day, if your financial institution or credit card company is going to forgive that unauthorized transaction and give your money back, you really don’t care if you got hacked (other than the inconvenience of having to change your card number each time!
