The article lists the advantages and disadvantages of identify monitoring services.

Pro: You’ll have peace of mind if you’re at a high risk of identity theft. Having an identity monitoring service may offer an extra layer of security and put your mind at ease.

Cons: The cost may be a problem. The more you pay, you more protection received. However, it can be expensive based on which plan you need.

Con: The services don’t necessarily prevent fraudulent activity. While these services will alert you that fraud has occurred, they won’t necessarily keep it from happening.

Con: You can get similar protection without paying an ID monitoring company. American Automobile Association offers its members free identity theft protection,

To some these identity monitoring services might seem just like insurance companies or worse an electronics insurance plan. I don’t really feel like I have an opinion of them. I definitely don’t subscribe to any of them. I feel like the author makes some valid points about piece of mind and how that can make you complacent. While some services might offer free identity protection, I have one concern, is that their main focus? Lifelock charges $9.99 a month for a basic plan that will reimburse $25,000 in potential stolen funds. They also have a plan that will reimburse $1 million. I doubt free services will do that. Some love paying monthly subscriptions to things they never see tangibly, I do not find satisfaction in such activities. To each his own.

Hi Xinteng, its good to know that signing up for ID theft protection, we can receive alerts if a hacker makes a credit inquiry, sets up a new account or uses your personal information, such as your Social Security number, driver’s license or credit card. But I am thinking about, what kind of information I need to provide to the protection company when sign up? I guess its include PII. How can those company ensure they won’t suffer data breach?
