Sein et al. (2011) proposed to combine action research (AR) with design research (DR) to consider both technological rigors and organizational relevance when designing IT artifacts. The proposed method can combine the advantages of both DR that seeking to develop prescriptive design knowledge through the building and evaluating innovative IT artifacts intended to solve an identified class of problems and AR that combining theory generation with researcher intervention to solve immediate organizational problems. The detailed steps (see the sates and principles shown in Figure 1 of Sein et al. 2011) are clear and useful. I just have several questions: (1) Are there any weakness of ADR by combining DR and AR? If not, why previous research scholars didn’t propose this idea instead of proposing DR and AR first. (2) It seems that we need both practice and theory to create and format the IT artifacts. Thus, my question is how the ADR will perform if there are no tightly fitting theories applicable to the research questions/context or artifact design. (3) It seems to me that ADR process needs to have the organization environment to implement and evaluate the designed IT artifacts. Therefore, it is true that we can not do ADR research if we don’t have cooperation with an organization/enterprise?
Lukyanenko and Parsons (2020) proposed various situations of design science indeterminacy and the reasons and solutions to every different indeterminate scenario. The indeterminacy and whole solutions presented in this paper are interesting and useful. I just have a few questions:
(1) Can ADR presented by Sein et al. (2011) reduce the design science indeterminacy since they also try to make the designed theory more relevant to organizational practice.
(2) Can design science research capture the correlation rather than a causal mechanism? As I know designing an AI algorithm to make predictions, such as fake reviews detection can also be called DSR, but they depend on the correlation between IVs and DV rather than the causal mechanism.
(3) How design science research identify the causal mechanism when designing artifacts? Can the indeterminacy come from the causation robustness or weak internal validity of the causation relationship between artifacts?
