Opportunity Knocks: What Employers Want

Thanks to Main Line Chamber and Lissa Hilsee, I was able to gain valuable insight on what catches employers\\\’ attention at the Opportunity Knocks: What Employers Want event. Multiple companies like Vanguard and Vertex Inc. came to give advice to students and recent graduates alike on what they would like to see in a candidate and how to strengthen your resume and skills in order to stand out more.

The event was held in a Zoom meeting on August 7 and it was in the same format as before. The first part would be a webinar, then we would be split into breakout groups and share what we learn from our discussion when we eventually come back as a whole. There were several good points that were made such as being successful in interviews, perfecting your resume and cover letters, as well as honing one\\\’s skills. First, during an interview– one should use the STAR method to keep your point clear and concise. It\\\’s also important to watch your tone of voice, be present and maintain eye contact. As for resumes, they are almost like a psychological game since recruiters really only look at a resume for about 10 seconds. In order to catch the recruiter\\\’s attention, a person has to have a clear and straightforward resume that showcases key geometric skills, as well as have grabbing action words like \\\”handled\\\” or \\\”contributed.\\\” However, it\\\’s very easy to overdo a resume so a level of neutrality goes a long way. Along with resumes may also come with cover letters– if a company requires it. When creating a cover letter, one should showcase how they are going to bring value to the company and show what the particular position they\\\’re applying for will help them in the long run. A cover letter is essentially bringing one\\\’s resume to life.

Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed the advice and hope to be able to attend another one of these events in the future.
