Events I attended

CIGNA Job Shadow Day – I was invited by Cigna to come and visit its building and understand its company. I was met by people in the company’s TECDP program and learned about what the program was and how it allowed the associates to grow in multiple departments within the company. As the day went on, I shadowed one of the associates, and how she worked with legacy systems with multiple clients. This event showed me the daily life of someone who works within Cigna, as well as showing me the supportive culture the company creates among its employees.

SOCIAL MEDIA MARKETING – GET THE WORD OUT! – In this event, Brian Hart, founder of Flackable, came to Temple to talk about using social media to improve our presence. Mr. Hart talked about how he was able to use social media outlets like Twitter, Facebook, Linkedin and was able to make Flackable. He then went on about how students like me can use these outlets in order to make connections with people in the business industry. Being active will allow companies to recognize me and possibly notify me for opportunities.

FOX IT Career Fair – The FOX IT fair was a career fair that only MIS students were allowed to go to. It was a great experience because I was able to meet with people from many different companies who all have exposure to the tech industry. I was able to learn how diverse and intricate my major can take to. What I mean by that is that MIS can lead me into a path cyber security or a path into data science. These different paths have shown me that MIS was the right major to be in.

Participating in AIS speaker meetings – Every Monday of the semester, as an AIS member, I get to meet with executive people from companies such as Lockheed Martin to Alexion. These executives get to talk about themselves and how they go to where they are now. They also allow us to ask questions about their business and IT technology affecting the industry today. Going to these meetings showed me that at the end of the day, these executives were once like me, and that I myself can be like them one day.

AIS Lunch In – After the AIS meetings, there is a chance that the executives can stay and some AIS members are selected to meet with the executives and and lunch. Here, I get to ask more about the executive’s job or life. Again, it makes me realize that everyone has a beginning, and it will only take time for me to be like them one day.
