Retail Strategy Intern
My position for my Summer 2023 Internship was “Retail Strategy”, but was a technical position within the company.
- Information about the organization (e.g., type, size, location, specific division/department in which you are employed)
- Five Below is a large retailer headquartered in Philadelphia specializing in discounted items. I was a Retail Strategy intern in the Strategy department.
- Job function (e.g., overall role, assigned tasks)
- During my time at Five Below, I was tasked with creating a virtual view of all functions acted out by each division/department. In addition to this, I was tasked to code tools that aided in visibility and data submission.
- Examples of projects (e.g., list the projects you worked on and what you accomplished)
- I had a single, large project documenting all division functions and a timeline of when these functions occurred.
- I was tasked with coding automatic data submission tools and visibility selectors using a combination of Python and Visual Basic.
- I was lastly tasked with creating documentation for both non-technical users of the visualization as well as a technical document for the full-time employee tasked with maintaining the view.
- What you learned and how it relates to your major (e.g., describe what you learned from this internship in the context of specific courses).
- This role taught me how to make the distinction between technical and non-technical employees and further showed me how to explain a complicated/technical solution to both parties. (MIS 3534)
- I further developed a problem-solving mindset and how to use technical solutions to improve upon challenges that may seem non-technical at first. (MIS 3534)
- Improved coding skills and determining which data should be used for what. (MIS 2101 and 2502)
