- Job function (e.g., overall role, assigned tasks): Pflaumer Brothers Inc. is a chemical manufacturer that specializes in making coatings, inks, and lubricants. As an intern here, my overall role was analyze different data sets in Excel and create data visualizations to present information in a way that made sense.
- Examples of projects (e.g., list the projects you worked on and what you accomplished): One of the projects I worked on was creating monthly financial reporting packages in PowerPoint. These presentations included graphs of costs and revenues for the month, as well as graphs forecasting future sales. All of these graphs were created with Excel. Another project I worked on was cleaning up the data for the company’s inventory of chemical products. This made it easier to look up information about a certain product in the database.
- What you learned and how it relates to your major (e.g., describe what you learned from this experience in the context of specific courses): This internship gave me valuable experience on how to handle data and how to create data visualizations that tell a story, which is something we discuss the importance of in MIS2502. Another valuable experience I gained was getting to observe the process of a company choosing a new ERP. I got to sit in on meetings and watch ERP demos as our company figured out what were the most important things that the new ERP needed to be able to do. ERPs are a huge part of the MIS major and it was cool to actually experience how important a good ERP is to a company being able to run efficiently.
