My Second Internship Experience
My Second Internship Experience at EY.
Although I finished my internship in early August, I would like to take a moment and reflect on my experience.
This summer I had the amazing chance to return to EY as a Technology Risk Consultant Intern. During my time at the firm, I was able to meet many people within the Tech Risk practice that have helped further my learning at the firm. Before I begin, I wanted to give special thanks to Bryan Huang, Patrick Chen, Madison Collins and Madison Regan. You guys were instrumental in my experience at the firm this summer and for that, I thank you!
What did I learn?
I had the chance to learn new technologies, such as PowerBI and Alteryx, to curate large data sets into digestible information. I had some experience with larger data sets from taking Data Science (MIS 0855) a few years ago but exploring different technologies was a great way to resharpen my skill set. I’ve also had the chance to sharpen other older skills I’ve retained from some of my core MIS courses, like Digital Systems (MIS 2101), where I created ERD diagrams to illustrate different entities in a business process. I had the chance of experiencing unique IT controls that were specific to my client but are also typically used on other clients like Oracle and SAP processes. Lastly, I learned how Tech Risk impacts the overall audit process, the different stages of an audit process, IT risk assessments, and testing for these procedures.
What were my biggest takeaways?
After completing my internship, some of my biggest takeaways are not to be intimidated and to take on the biggest tasks first. Initially, I was intimidated by the fact that everyone knew more than me, but I slowly started to adapt over time. This ended up being beneficial for me as I had the chance to speak to colleagues in other IT sub-service lines at the firm, such as Cybersecurity and data analytics. My other biggest takeaway was taking on larger tasks first. This would give me ample time to work through these tasks and responsibilities myself before asking for additional help. This allowed me to “learn by doing” rather than watching it be done for me.
What was the most interesting experience I had during my internship?
Although I couldn’t travel to the client site, I was able to travel to Atlanta, Georgia, for EY’s National Intern Celebration Day. While I was there, I met interns from five different EY offices! In addition to this, all service lines were recommended to attend, so I had the experience of meeting Tax and Consulting interns outside of the Tech Risk practice.
Conclusion
In conclusion, I had a great experience at EY and would do it again if possible. I think my experience was very valuable as I was exposed to new technologies and software that are pushing business globally while also meeting many new individuals from different areas of the company.
