SUMMARY:The cybercrime link from those behind the door (incarcerated) to those in the free world
DESCRIPTION:The pervasive use of technology in our daily lives has undoubtedly brought about numerous benefits\, but it has also become a powerful tool for individuals with criminal intent\, transcending the boundaries between the incarcerated and the “free world.” Criminals\, whether behind bars or navigating the complexities of society\, leverage technology to exploit vulnerabilities and victimize others. This omnipresent threat necessitates a heightened level of awareness to effectively mitigate and respond to potential dangers. \nThe only solace in the face of these technological challenges lies in fostering awareness of the potential risks and developing robust strategies for responding to attacks. This awareness involves not only recognizing the evolving tactics employed by criminals but also understanding the vulnerabilities that technology introduces into our interconnected world. By staying informed\, individuals can better safeguard themselves against cyber threats\, identity theft\, and various other forms of technological exploitation. \nIn honor of Black History Month\, the CARE Lab\, Black Girls Hack\, and the Women in Cybersecurity (Temple Chapter) are co-hosting this virtual event with the amazing Dr. Tessa Cole. \nSpeaker: Dr. Tessa Cole \n \nBio: Dr. Cole earned a Ph.D. in criminology and criminal justice from Georgia State University. Her work has been published in peer-reviewed publications such as Victims & Offenders and International Criminal Justice Review\, with several forthcoming publications. She served a temporary assignment with the Department of Homeland Security\, Homeland Security Investigation (HSI)\, and as Director of Research for Street Grace\, a 501(c)(3) Organization that focused on the Commercial Sexual Exploitation of Children. Specific to her area of research\, she conducted studies on internet-based platforms\, such as Telegram\, Discord\, Monster\, Indeed\, and Seeking Arrangements\, and analyzed the yield data from research studies to provide vital information to government organizations\, such as the Federal Reserve Bank. She has taught various criminology and criminal justice courses.\nCurrently\, she teaches and serves as a Deputy Sheriff in a major metropolitan agency in the southeast in an investigation unit focused on digital forensics and criminal enterprises. \nDr. Cole on LinkedIn  \n
