Baking

9 years ago when my family moved to a new place, my aunt brought us a marble cake as a housewarming gift. I finished three-fourths of it. And I asked her if she could teach me how to bake.

The following week, I ate the whole marble cake, but that time, it was made by myself.

Baking has been a big part of my life since then. I first started small by making cupcakes and cookies for my family. Then for friends. Then more complex cakes for my customers when I opened an online bakery in the summer of 2017.

But I don’t just bake. I create. Youtube videos and recipes could never satisfy me, and I always tried to come up with personalized tastes for each person I’m baking for. Baking taught me the concept of meraki, which means “putting the essence of yourself – love, creativity, and soul – in the work that you do”.

Below are some shots of cakes I have merakily made for my customers.

“How I Built This?” Podcast by Guy Raz

I discovered “How I Built This” just when summer began so this series automatically hopped on my commuting playlist. Listening to the podcast gives me insights into how founders came up with ideas for their businesses, and their stories, both ups and downs, along the development of those companies. What fascinates me are the thought process of each founder in approaching a decision, and core values he or she wants to deliver through his or her company.

Some of my favorite episodes include:

  • TOMS: Blake Mycoskie
  • Lonely Planet: Maureen & Tony Wheeler
