Off-Campus Safety
As Temple continues to grow and expand its facilities further into the neighborhoods surrounding the main campus, the number of students living outside campus is also expected to increase as well as the distance they live away from campus. We have seen this first hand during our time here at Temple as more and more students are moving further into the surrounding neighborhoods as far west as 20th St., as far north as York St, and as far south as Girard Ave. As a result, the Temple University Police Department expanded their patrol borders in 2014 as shown in the picture to the right. The new patrol borders are from Susquehanna to Girard (North/South) and 18th St. to 9th St. (West/East).
The rDOOR Application will ensure the safety of the increasing number of off-campus students utilizing the service by validating the student’s TUID and automatically planning the driver’s route to the students’ exact addresses as opposed to dropping students off on corners. Also, creating an application that makes the TUr Door process more convenient will increase the number of students who use the service, thus decreasing the amount of students walking home at night and bringing greater overall safety to the Temple environment.
