Team Leach Family Martial Arts

I work as an instructor at a martial arts studio where we teach the Korean art of Tae-Kwon-Do. I typically lead classes with attendance of five through fifteen students, but that number regularly exceeds thirty. My job is to keep these students motivated and engaged while guiding them through an effective workout routine. Because classes are divided based on age and experience, I meet and  work with people of all ages and walks of life. Should another instructor be present to lead classes, I may have the opportunity to work with students individually and in smaller groups.

In order to properly manage these classes I have to create several plans of action and dynamically change them depending on various factors: If the number of students is too few or too many, if there is a considerable age or experience gap in the students – which most often occurs in the case of parents attending with their children. Inducting new students is an important part of my responsibilities, and another factor that affects lesson planning.

Mostly the students and other teachers I work with are members who I am familiar with, but no institution can survive without new blood. Various responsibilities occasionally prevent the other senior instructors from being present to. In these cases it falls upon me to take charge. On some days my associates are new and inexperienced teachers, being new-hires or current students looking to help a lower level class. These new teachers typically have to observe class and learn about the style of teaching. Whenever it is possible, I delegate tasks that let the new teachers help the class go smoothly while gaining hands-on experience.
