How Coursework Relates to Career Interests

I am interested in becoming a business systems analyst or consultant after graduating from Temple. The coursework I have done throughout my time as an MIS major has greatly prepared me to fill one of these positions. Having a course in data analytics is a great course to learn hjow to look at data and apply it to improving a business process. Additionally, an introduction to SQL was extremely helpful as a business systems analyst intern because I was constantly creating queries to extract employee information out of a database. Another course I was an business analyst for a lumber company in Sommerville, New Jersey. I had to work with a team to figure out an solution for a problem that was given to my team. We had to figure out what was the main problem and present the best solution. We had to interview  key business people and figure out what was important to our final project and what wasn’t. At the end of the course we had create and present our prototype to the sponsor.

Having a course in project management was also very helpful. Knowing the basics of how technology projects are run in a business is key, especially if you are put on a big, important ERP system project. Knowing the terms of a project like system integration testing (SIT) and user acceptance testing (UAT) is all important information when participating in a project. The most importantly project management has taught me to trust you team around you and the value of keeping the project on time, in scope, and under budget.
