Talen Energy Summer Internship

Talen Energy Pic

During my summer at Talen Energy, I spent my time as a Business Systems Analyst in the IT department.  Talen Energy, originally PPL Energy Supply, launched on June 1st and I was able to experience the creation of a new publicly traded company. Throughout my internship I spent the majority of my time working on two different projects. The main project I worked on was the implementation of a new ERP system called Workday. My role on the project was to assist with the employee data conversion on the Human Resources side of the business from the old system (PeopleSoft) to the new system (Workday). I was given the opportunity to sit in on system design sessions between Talen Energy employees and Deloitte Contractors, who were facilitating the implementation of Workday at Talen. Working on the ERP implementation project greatly increased my knowledge of HR business process like recruiting, talent, benefits, payroll, compensation, etc. I also improved my technical skills: SQL, Java, and HTML. I used SQL queries to extract data out of the HR database and converted it into data conversion workbooks Deloitte was using load the data into the first prototype(P1). After the first prototype (P1) was built, I sat in on the prototype review sessions, which overviewed the business processes and functionality of what was discussed in the previous design sessions.

The second project I worked on at my time at Talen Energy was an Intern Dashboard project. This project was for the Business Intelligence team and was an effort of myself and three other interns in my department. The goal of the project was to display information: tasks name of information being updated to the database Informatica, whether the rows updated were successful or if they failed. Myself and the three other interns presented this to the Business Intelligence team.

My overall experience at Talen Energy was a great learning experience. I really enjoyed my time working with Talen employees, who were always willing to help and willing to answer questions I had. The opportunity to be a part of an implementation of a new ERP system was extremely rewarding to see the amount of resources and planning it takes to run a project of that size and importance.
