MIST Philadelphia: Fundraising Chair
Aside from school, a huge chunk of my time is taken up by my involvement in non-profit organizations. The Muslim Interscholastic Tournament of Philadelphia is a non-profit, student led organization which holds an annual interscholastic tournament for the tri state area. This tournament serves as a regional tournament to qualify for the larger national tournament that takes place at the end of the summer. This year, the actual tournament took place on March 28-30th weekend with over 300 attendees.
In my leadership position as fundraising chair, my role was to make sure there are adequate funds for the organization to host the tournament and continue to grow each year. In 2012, when I first got this position, we designed sponsorship packages to send to potential sponsors. This increased our revenue by 20% to $11, 500 for the year to go towards making the tournament better and better each year.
This year as part of the organization’s fifth year anniversary, on March 1, I successfully organized and hosted a fundraising banquet which raised over $8,000! It took a lot of planning and coordinating, but we were able to draw out a crowd of 200 participants at the banquet.
