Opportunity Knocks: Building a Resume and Cover Letter that Gets You Noticed

During Fall 2024, I had the opportunity to attend a webinar called Opportunity Knocks: Building a Resume and Cover Letter that Gets You Noticed, hosted by The Main Line Chamber of Commerce. Through this webinar, I had the chance to hear from hiring managers of different companies speak about tips and tricks in regards to crafting a good resume and cover letter. I learned about key aspects of a resume, such as having an objectives section and making sure that each job experience details the three W’s: What tasks were performed, What tools and technology were used, and What was achieved. The objectives section allows applicants to detail their purpose and goal of applying for this position while the three W’s allows applicants to highlight the key takeaways from their work experience, as well as soft and technical skills. As for the cover letter, I learned about the overall goal of a cover letter and the importance of having one from the perspective of the employer. Cover letters allow applicants to bring forth their researched knowledge about the company while also adding a bit of personalization when explaining their interest in the company. In the eyes of the employer, it showcases the applicants’ dedication and effort as they took the extra step to create a cover letter, especially in scenarios when it is not necessarily needed. Overall, it was very insight to learn about the key aspects of resume and cover letter building as the knowledge helps all types of applicants from different backgrounds.
