Subaru of America – IT Internship

This summer I had the opportunity to work an internship in the IT department of Subaru Of America, Inc. SOA is the United States distributor for the Japanese car brand Subaru and supports a vast network of dealers throughout the country. In the IT department, I was a part of the web development team, which creates, supports, and maintains the main internal company website, Subarunet. Subarunet is used by both HQ employees and dealers around the U.S. for things like vehicle tracking, getting reports, reporting sales, and many others, so it is a vital part of the company. As an intern for the web development team, I worked on a number of different assignments. I helped resolve tickets that came into our team, basically problems users had that couldn’t be solved by the help desk. I also did testing for different apps and functions of the website that needed to be tested before release. I worked with one of the programmers on the team to configure and deploy apps that were in development to QA, which is where they are tested. Besides the web development team, I got to work with other teams throughout the department and experience different parts of IT. I worked with business analysts on different projects, mainly creating MD50 documents which outline functional requirements for upcoming projects. I also got the opportunity to sit in on many IT meetings and see how projects and problems are discussed and handled by IT professionals. This experience has been very rewarding. It has given me a lot of insight into the inner workings of IT and given me a chance to use what I’ve learned in class, as well as learn things first hand that we usually don’t experience in class.
