6th annual Temple University NBCUniversal Data Analytics Challenge

For the 2018 NBCUniversal Data Analytics Challenge, our team received first place on the analysis track.

In Fall of 2018, I worked with Sergio Aguilar and Rohit Bobby in Temple’s NBCUniversal sponsored IBIT Data Analytics Competition. Participants were provided with sets of big data and a question. Our team was seeking to answer, \\\”How can media companies align with esports. We cleaned and analyzed three obfuscated samples of esport viewer ages, genders, and watch duration using Excel and Tableau. We presented our info-graphic that provided actionable recommendations NBCUniversal could take moving forward. Our submission was selected as one of 22 finalists.

As finalists, we presented our info-graphic in front of a panel of judges and got selected as first place winners on the analysis track. The competition had two separate tracks, analysis, and visualization. Our team one 2500 dollars as a result of this challenge.

This project taught me so many lessons that will be of value in my future professional endeavors. When we put the challenge into perspective, 3 students get transformed into subject matter experts on a topic, put to the task of diving deep into data, analyzing it, and presenting actionable solutions to higher level executives.

That in itself is amazing preparation for the professional world. It taught us to give more with less. It taught us to condense mountains of data and weeks worth of information gathering into a 4 minute pitch. We got the privilege of coming together as a team in pursuit of a common goal, despite our differences in educational background. It directly relates to the work we do in the MIS class data analytics.
