Why do we care about domains? Why is it ok for you to not be on a domain at home, but at work your company makes your work pc join their domain? What’s the point?
How does any of this relate to your future work as IT Auditors?
Companies make you join their domain because it allow the company to administer common set of rules when you’re in their domain. This allows the companies to set up usernames and passwords and grant access to certain people and less access to others. Domains was really good subject to learn about and really relate to being an IT auditor because it talks about access controls, which is a common thing in audit. .
Your home network is typically going to have far fewer hosts and devices to manage and consider. Beyond a company having more stuff, it has to consider compliance requirements, optimizing employee and customer usage, etc.
Domain is really important for organizations to keep their computers and systems safe. People join the domain for doing their job and the organizations could set up the security method such as firewalls to keep their computers and staff away from the bad, outside internet. This could help the organizations to do their access control well and decrease the level of risk for themselves. For our future IT auditor career, this is really useful because almost all of the organizations, whether profit or nonprofit, have their own domain. It will be common for us to face it when we work in the real world.
As we discovered in class, those of us at home with our personal computers had a workgroup while those physically present in the lab at temple did have a domain, so Computers on home networks are usually part of a workgroup, while computers on workplace networks/school networks are usually part of a domain. (.com, .net, .edu, .org, .gov etc)
Domains are basically useful to form permissions and to centrally manage networks/resources, so you don’t necessarily have to be on a domain at home. (probably like 2 or 3 or 4 people have their personal computers, what permissions needs to be formed in the house??? what needs to be centrally managed in the home ?)
Work however is a different ball game, having a domain makes it easier and manageable to set rules and procedures for a group of computer and devices on a network. It also adds an extra layer of security as having a domain restricts outside traffic from accessing computers within the network.
This relates to our work as IT Auditors because when we talk about domains, we inevitably also talk about IP addresses. Within the Internet, domains are defined by the IP address. All devices sharing a common part of the IP address are said to be in the same domain. And as we also learned in the previous class, IP addresses are used to segregate networks. So for example, if we want to test SOD, Access controls, networking environment etc, you check that employees with conflicting duties might be on one domain but cannot be on some other particular domain, you check that different servers. Routers etc are on different networks/domain/IP addresses etc
As we taught in class, domain is a name serve to identify our computers, and networks. For example, Temple University let all students join Temple domain because it is easier for Temple to monitor and make sure all the servers are compliance with Temple campus domain rules, meanwhile it is easier for Temple to protect all the servers, such as set up Firewall to protect domain and all the devices connected with the domain. Joining the same domain is actually convenient for students, because they could log in the same server with different devices.
In additional, domain name is important because the Internet’s addressing scheme is more effective with it. Every computer has an IP address, a group of computer could created the domain name system to assign a unique domain name to each IP address.
Domain is significant to the organizations and company, it helps companies to make sure their systems are safe. Domain is the name for server to identify our computers. The company add the domains because it make the management manages your computer, monitors it, and grant access right to specific computer. The company can also set up firewall or other security applications to keep the computers away from the some attack and reduce the risk. As an IT auditor, it is normal to touch with and know about the domain, almost all organizations and companies have their own domain.
People care about domain because it helps organizations to ensure security of computers. If an organization lets all computers join to the domain, it is also good for the organization to monitor all computers to reduce the risk of being attacked, because the employees in the organization use different devices to login the same server. The domain name is as important as IP address of a computer. It is unique to each domain.
A domain is group of computers and devices on a network that are administered as a unit. In class we looked at the Group Policy which is applied at the domain level to ensure that devices comply to the same rules and procedures. A domain is used to centrally administer, manage and secure devices. It allows computers to share resources. There is no need to be in a domain at home because there is no need for centralized management. Computers at home can belong to a workgroup.
As auditors we will be expected to review the policies defined in the domain to see if they conform to best security practices and the overall Information Security Policy.
Domains are important in the world of information technology since it helps ensure security. For example, if you worked for a government agency, such as the FBI, you would have to log in to their domain each time you clocked in. Why? Because it enables the organization to monitor what you are doing. Also, having a domain would prevent outsiders from gaining access to their systems. Therefore, domains allow and prevent access to individuals. This obviously is not important at home because you do not need to be monitored or told what you can do/cannot do. As an IT auditor, we will be provided access to a variety of domains, each with its own set of rules.
Domain is a group of computers and devices on a network that are administered under the same protocol, and it uses to manage and secure services. It is so important because it can help organizations to keep their system and computers safe, and allows devices to share the resources. It is also helpful for organizations to reduce the risk of any attack, and monitor the organization performance. IT Auditors should have an adequate knowledge about domain, and know how to access to different domains with different rules and policies, because they will face with various domains during their job, and they need to understand the policies about that.
Domains allow networks to be bounded by specific rules, policies and thus give a level of security and control that are required by organizations. Taking the analogy about our IP address being part of an envelope mailing address, a domain could be considered similar to a HOA (Home Owners Association) in a neighborhood. HOA’s will make you sign a contract when you move into the neighborhood and will have rules: Your lawn must be mowed X times a month, House has to be Y style, No parking cars on road etc. In the same way a domain allows you to set rules – Where to print, what websites you can visit, and which storage you have access too. You don’t have to live in an HOA, just like you don’t have to have a domain at home because you are the sole administrator of your home network.
Its important to understand domains because working in IT you will have to be able to understand what constitutes a client’s domain – what are the rules, policies, etc.
Living in an HOA sounds like a nightmare to me, however it makes sense for businesses and organizations who have to protect themselves.
A domain or domain name is the location of a website. And each computer on the Internet has an Internet protocol (IP) address: a unique string of four numbers separated by periods. Also, I learn that a right domain name can attract walk-in business. If your company your own domain name that makes the company looks very professional. Besides, As an IS auditor, I should learn how to monitor user logons in a Domain.
When referring to an Internet address or name a domain or domain name is the location of a website. For example, the domain name “google.com” points to the IP address “216.58.216.164”, As we discussed in last week class, we know domain can protect outside environment attacking to some extent.
Domains are important in this era of high technology that is more and more used to commit illegal acts. An organization’s data must be in a secure domain where only those with a need to know have access. The domain also enables the organization to monitor who is accessing the data and trace what the user does.
As an IT auditor I need to be able to access and monitor domain activity to see if any unapproved or illegal activity has transpired.
For network perspective, A group of computers and devices on a network that are administered as a unit with common rules and procedures. Within the Internet, domains are defined by the IP address. All devices sharing a common part of the IP address are said to be in the same domain.
When we are at home, we use a single computer to connect to the Internet through WAN method. However, when are are at the company, there is a group of computers connected through LAN method. At this point, as an IT auditor, we have to concentrate on domain for those LAN computers, because security policies may be violated by employees and then caused some risks on the company’s data.
Why do we care about domains? Why is it ok for you to not be on a domain at home, but at work your company makes your work pc join their domain? What’s the point?
A domain name represents an IP resource, such as a personal computer used to access the Internet, a server computer hosting a website, or the website itself or any other service communicated via the Internet. When we use the internet at home, the domain name that our IP address belong to represents individuals. however, when we work in a company, the domain name represents your company and the company’s brand.
People care about the domain name because it is important to us, it can ensure the company’s system security. Domain names identify computer names and monitor computer access, and domain names are unique. Therefore, as an IT auditor, we should understand domain name activities and monitor for unusual activities.

How does any of this relate to your future work as IT Auditors?
A domain provides provide network administrators with a way to manage a large number of PCs and control them from one place. Domains are generally made up of computers on the same local network. However, computers joined to a domain can continue communicating with their domain controller over VPN or Internet connection. This allows businesses and schools to remotely manage laptops they provide to their employees and students.
My personal home computer is an isolated entity where I can control its settings and user accounts. A computer joined to a domain is different — these settings are controlled on a domain controller.
As an IT Auditor, I need to be able to see the organization’s server is secure and access is provided to only the appropriate individuals. The first step in securing the organization’s data is securing their server.
We care about domains from a security and administration perspective. On a home network, there are limited number of users and it is less critical to monitor the permissions. However, for a corporation, user administration and security become extremely important. This relates to future work as auditors as by testing a selection of user roles on the domain, you can test the entire population because the roles/permissions are granted centrally.
Usually, a corporate domain serves to identify internet resources with a text-based label that is convenient and easier to memorize in the internet protocols. It is also used as simple identifier to indicate ownership or control of resource. So at work, the company will require your working pc join the domain so that easier to follow the common rules and procedures. As an IT auditor, when we auditing the organization in the future, we need to understand the benefit of utilizing domains are: 1) Easier to memorize and distinguish from another website. 2) Easier to control and administer with common rules and procedures. 3) Easier to secure the network environment and monitor any suspicious actions.
