IT Intern                                                                                             May 2014 – August 2014

  • Documented all equipment in ACT’s data center with information, such as space used, device information, alias name, model, serial number, function, power source, power consumption, and notes.
  • Collaborated with staff to develop employee procedures when performing frequent Internet processes.
  • Recommended a procedure for ACT to integrate three silo databases previously stored and processed in three different applications.

During the summer of 2014 I worked at Antigua Computer Technology (A.C.T.). A.C.T. is one of the leading technology and Internet service providers in the island of Antigua & Barbuda. My internship consisted of three main projects, which included: 1) Working with staff in the various departments to develop a set of procedures employees must follow when doing certain every day internet procedures. Such procedures include: Signing up new customers, disconnecting/suspending customers, and customer account modification. 2) Documenting the data center of A.C.T.. In this project I provided a floor layout of the data center, labeling each rack in colocation space, inventory of all patch panels, switches, routers and servers in each rack with their key function, OS, IP addresses, U-Space, brand, model, serial number, power source, power consumption, and notes. I also created a daily and weekly checklist to ensure UPS Power, temperature, security, etc. are in order. 3) Recommending a way in which A.C.T. can create a relationship between three silo databases, which are currently stored and processed in three different applications. Along with these three projects, I also sat in, observed and provided valuable input for the weekly meetings held with the key staff members in the Internet sales department of the company.

During my internship at A.C.T. I learned many valuable things that simply could not have been taught in the classroom or textbook. The three biggest things I have learned from my internship that I just couldn’t have learned in the classroom or from a textbook is how to network in the workplace, the importance of communicating effectively, and the importance of following through with new ideas and tasks. Firstly, my internship taught me how to effectively network in the workplace. This allows me to be in constant contact with many of the higher level staff of the company, including the CEO himself. Secondly, the lesson of communicating effectively in the workplace allows me to communicate with my co-workers efficiently and professionally. Finally, the drive to follow through with new ideas took me a long way in my internship. This new lesson earned me a lot of respect from my colleagues, simply because employees in the island of Antigua & Barbuda are very laid back and tend to put their tasks and new ideas aside until they eventually become irrelevant.
