Big Data in Today’s Organizations

Big data is an invaluable resource that tells businesses exactly what customers need and want and how or why they make purchasing decisions. Over the next three to five years, big data will become a key business strategy for a majority of large private and public organizations. Big Data is a collection of data so enormous and complex that it becomes difficult to process using traditional data processing applications and tools. The rapid expansion of technology worldwide is skyrocketing big data’s emerging demand in every business sector. It is natural for consumers to be more likely to buy when offers are targeted directly towards them.

IBM is a pioneer of data analysis; Big Data is one of their leading core competencies and future initiatives. The technology company has a division specially devoted to Big Data and consulting services focused in Business Analytics and Optimization and applying Big Data to various enterprises. IBM applies Big Data to a variety of areas, including, but not limited to, the distribution, finance, and industrial sectors. Studies conducted by IBM, partnered with the University of Oxford, indicate that organizations using analytics of Big Data have created competitive advantages for themselves. Through Big Data, organizations are able to make decisions that are smarter, faster, and make a difference.

Fiserv, a financial services leader, uses Big Data to provide data and analysis to clients; providing insights from billions of transactions for better-targeted offers. The benefits of Big Data are not limited to businesses. For example, Miami-Dade Police Department partnered with IBM and used advanced analytics to uncover insights in robbery cases. In addition, Big Data has allowed the police force to more quickly identify suspects, making arrests, and reducing repeat crimes. Big Data also facilitates better usage of current technologies; Sprint uses Big Data analytics to put real-time intelligence in mobile networks, increasing capacity by 90%.
