Audit Intern

  1. Job function (e.g., overall role, assigned tasks)
    • Visit several different restaurants and bars in the Philadelphia area and take a count and measure their alcohol inventory to upload to the company cloud
    • Once all inventory is uploaded, I work with my superiors to analyze the data and compare the latest data with that of the previous time period’s data in order to discover any questionable differences between the two periods
    • Once all the data was confirmed to be accurate, I create audit reports for clients based on the information collected. In these audit reports, I would detail the percentages of alcohol use based on new inventory bought and previous inventory on hand. The reports also include percentages of alcohol that were not accounted for (not recorded in the point of service system) and how much possible income was lost based on those percentages.
    • Input weekly invoices for restaurants into the company cloud in order to keep all data updated and accurate.
    • Worked directly with clients on designing the format and layout of their restaurants’ point of service systems.
  2. Examples of projects (e.g., list the projects you worked on and what you accomplished)
    • Plough and The Stars – collected data and created audit reports for the restaurant. We discovered that each week when we ran the audit, there was a significant amount of tequila that was missing in comparison to what was recorded as being sold. We then offered suggestions to the owner on reasons why this could be happening and how to combat it in order to lose less money on a weekly basis.
    • Em’s Place – I worked with the new owner of the restaurant on designing the point of service system their employees will be using on a daily basis. While creating the buttons and functions for the POS system, I collaborated with the owner on the functionality of buttons and which design would be most efficient from the point of view of his employees. In addition, I also worked with the owner on appropriately pricing the drink menu based on the cost of purchasing the alcohol.
  3. What you learned and how it relates to your major (e.g., describe what you learned from this experience in the context of specific courses)
    • The most important thing I learned during this internship is that there are many factors, which are not always apparent, that could affect data. For example, some elements which could affect are missing/inaccurate invoices, overlooking items while collecting data, and restaurant employees inaccurately ringing up items customers order. I’ve learned to become extra meticulous when reviewing data and to also take time to think of all possibilities for any discrepancies found in the data comparisons.
    • I have also learned that although I believe a system should be designed one specific way, the client will not always agree and that is okay. When working with clients on the format of their POS system, I look at it from the angle of someone who will be working with the raw data that comes from it. The owner, however, looks at the POS system from the view of someone who just wants it to be easy to understand for their workers. These opposing viewpoints lead to very helpful conversations where both the owner and I were able to understand what each of us inevitably wanted to accomplish and work together to create a format that would work in both of our favors.
