The School District of Philadelphia
Interning at The School District of Philadelphia has been an unparalleled educational and professional experience. While working my internship I was able to put to use and expand on skills and topics I have learned about throughout my time at The Fox School. My major Duties as an intern were using the Districts ERP system to create reports in regards to spending and payments and to create small and sometimes large databases using access or excel to assist in purchasing decisions. I was fortunate enough to be able to help on the Districts annual mass purchase of textbooks for 218 schools. By creating a data base and utilizing pivot tables I was able to combine all schools orders by book to achieve larger economies of scale resulting in better pricing and increased supplemental material. This project resulted in over $50,000 in savings and over $100,000 in supplemental material such as additional books, teaching material, and learning games.
Throughout my 11 months at the District I had the opportunity to speak with many highly educated and experienced professionals. Such professionals included the COO, CIO, several Depart Directors, and multiple Department Managers. Speaking with these professionals was beneficial in helping me find out my career goals, what paths may be the best for me, and possible future opportunities.
I have greatly enjoyed and benefited from my experience at The School District of Philadelphia and although I am leaving to complete an internship at AstraZeneca this summer I have accepted an offer to return to the District come next semester.
