IoT Research

The internet has become an essential in western society, and how fast it’s expanded is even more shocking. It has grown to the point where much of our infrastructure, accessories, home products, and etc. have some sort of internet connection. To say more, one Forbes article mentioned how by 2020 there will be over 26 billion devices that are connected. This gradual technological change has resulted into The Internet of Things (IoT). It’s a huge network of things and people, as the relationships would be between people-people, people-things, and things-things. As things are increasingly connected to the internet, there’s going to be more opportunities to gather and analyze data.

This is a huge positive for businesses since they have access to more data regarding their products and systems, leading ways for improvement. Companies like Microsoft, Amazon, and Google already provide IoT services. One example which is being planned involves Spain’s Balearic Islands. The plans are to put a half a million sensors around the island, and using them for IoT projects. One of the projects intends on detecting if a beach has become overcrowded, and offering alternatives to swimmers. The sensors are using an API which is connected to a platform for sensors and actuators. Google is backing the idea by providing the government with their IoT platform.

This all connects with Data Analytics since the vast amount of data that gets generated through IoT devices and things. It brings up a wider scope of data analysis as more things could be measured. In the course, I’ve learned about APIs which do transfer the data between applications and probably have a huge functionality in the IoT. The internet of things has only increased the importance of collecting and analyzing data since it’s prevalent all around us. The vast amount of data that is increasing can become easily useful through applications like Tableau I remember learning Tableau and seeing the power it has to change and clean the data, and make it visually understandable.
