2017 Summer Experience

Company: Summit Health Management

2017 Summer Experience

May 2017-Present

Before I discuss the different things I have done over the summer at my internship, I would like to give a brief history of my previous work experience at Summit Health Management. Since the completion of freshman year, I have interned at Summit Health management. This summer marked my fourth year at this company; I have also worked here over 3 winter breaks. Previously I have worked in various roles, with my latest position being a Revenue Cycle Integrity Specialist.  The number one priority of my job has been to work with my manager in the reduction of $2.5m in outstanding patient credit balances. I also assisted with the daily review of time of service refunds to determine if a return of funds was warranted. With only one more semester until graduation, I was put into a different role this summer. Starting in May of 2017 I have been interning with the Revenue Cycle Integrity Systems Analyst.

Interning with the Revenue Cycle Systems team has been an amazing experience.  I have been assisting in data analytics for the Revenue Cycle. I have been trained on running various revenue cycle reports such as claim denial rates, missing charge reports, and revenue and charge productivity reports. The reports are run through the companies practice management tool that produces raw data. It has been my job to manipulate the raw data and create a report containing different pivot tables with specific filters for different scenarios and then present them to my supervisor.

Aside from assisting in data analytics, this summer I have been involved in several different meetings. My supervisor has given me the opportunity to shadow different meetings where employees discuss the metrics that are important to the company or to analyze data that we have collected. My favorite experience form this summer was when I had the opportunity to leave the office and shadow a meeting between my supervisors and a doctor. Discussed in this meeting were the different metrics of a net collections report. This report contains information on where the doctor’s revenue comes from, how much outstanding A/R they have and at what rate they are collecting money. To be involved in this meeting and being able to watch how my boss effectively communicated different metrics to a provider was an unbelievable experience.

Lastly, another thing I have been working on this summer is auditing. I have reviewed some of the coding and billing for Summit Health Management to ensure procedures are being billed correctly. This has taught me a lot about the different specialties, services, and types of codes an individual will see when reviewing a visit. This summer has made me realize that no matter what position you are put into post-graduation, you still have so much to learn. Overall, I am extremely excited with the experience I have gained this summer and cannot wait to see how it translates to my future!
